We all decided it was better
than a golf tournament week-
end to get together as we have
in the past.
On Thursday night Jim and
Nancy took the Bartons on a
tour of the Rock House Ranch
at Newburg and they were
enchanted.
They reported Comanche
was greener than any place
they drove through between
here and Houston.
They also gloried in the
beautiful sunset. We take them
for granted, but not big city
folk. They really enjoy the
beauty of nature.
It was a fine weekend and
disproves the old saying about
fish and guests!

quality of its services, primar-
ily its capacity for rapid re-
sponse. Also because of an
overload (more than 70,000
calls last year), the North
Thxas Poison Center, funded
by Dallas’ Parkland Hospital
and the Dallas Hospital Dis-
trict, was forced to charge for
services to outlying cities and
counties, refusing services to
areas which did not pay. El
Paso already has been forced
to close its center for lack
of funds. Limited services re-
through a similar surcharge.
Perrotta said that the exact
rate of surcharge is not yet fi-
nal, but the Advisory Commis-
sion on State Emergency Com-
munications has. proposed a
rate of .3 cents per 81 charged
for intrastate long distance
calls. If approved, this rate
would provide about 86.5 mil-
lion annually.
TDH will manage the fi-
nancial grants to the cen-
ters with the 9-1-1 Commis-
sion, conduct poison preven-
tion programs and lend techni-
cal assistance. The 9-1-1 Com-
mission will coordinate rapid
communications between local
emergency units and the poi-
son centers. Funds are re-
quired to be available through
grants by September 1994.
“One of the most exciting
features of the new regional
poison center system will be
that calls about poison emer-
gencies will be automatically
channeled to the appropriate
poison center then they are re-
ceived by 9-1-1 operators," Per-
rotta said.
He explained that because
of differences between regions
in the numbers of expected
poisoning incidents, the cen-
ters will vary in both fund-
ing and in hours of operation.
“However,” he said, “since all
of the centers will be linked, if
one center should be closed or
overloaded at any given time
an emergency call comes in,
another center will automati-
cally take the call This way, we

possible telephone response to
poisoning emergencies.
More than 160,000 Thxans,
about 60 percent of whom
where children, suffered ac-
cidental poisoning last year.
According to health officials,
the state’s existing poison cen-
ters, have long been under-
funded and overloaded.
Galveston’s Thxas State Poi-
son Center, which was called
upon in more than 32,000
state last year, has lost its
national accreditation because u^d in preventing fu
it has had to compromise the poisoning8> Perrotta said.

Dennis Perrotta, chief of the
TDH Bureau of Epidemiology,
said, “Poison control in Thxas
has been in an emergency con-
dition of its own. Even EMS
and emergency room person-
nel have been getting busy
signals during life threatening
emergencies.”
Perrotta said that the 73rd
Legislature came tq the rescue
of the poison centers by creat-
ing new funding to establish
a network or regional centers
in Galveston, Dallas, El Paso,
Amarillo, Tbmple and San An-
tonio. The state will collect a
surcharge on intrastate long
distance calls to fund the
new centers. The state’s 9-1-
