BROTHER CONRAD
(Continued from Page 1)
with tuberculosis and was sent to Aus-
tin in 1885.
His virile outdoor life coupled with
the ideal climatic conditions soon
brought back his health, and he taught
for 14 years at St. Mary’s Parochial
school in Austin. Many of Austin’s
leading men will remember the genial
old brother with the full beard. Today
he is a bent, old man with silvery
beard and a faltering step, but with a
mind as active and keen as ever.
In 1901 he came to St. Edward’s as
a member of the faculty under the Rev.
John T. Boland, C.S.C., president at
the time. While teaching in the city,
Brother Conrad spent most of his sum-
mers at St. Edward’s and recounts viv-
idly, for a man of his age, how St.
Edward’s was a mere wooden structure
on the old Doyle homestead before the
Most Rev. Peter P. Hurth, C.S.C.,
erected the first stone building on the
present site in 1887.
From 1901 until several years ago
the aged brother was a very active
member of the Academy faculty. He
taught a regular schedule of classes
throughout these years, and still found
time for his outside work and hunting
which kept him in good health.
With words of great praise for the
Southwest which gave him back his
health, and a long, sad look to the city
he watched grow from a mere village
to a thriving town, this aged gray-
bearded laborer in the cause of educa-
tion said adieu to Austin. He de-
parted for Notre Dame where he will
spend his last days in peace and soli-
tude at the mother house of the Con-
gregation.

It means that it’s made right . . .
and old man Wellman, who taught us
how to make Granger, knew how. It
means that it’s cut right.
Just pack Granger good and
tight in your pipe and strike
a match. Folks seem to like it.
