“A Thing of Beauty is A Joy Forever”
A pictorial presentation of Jacob’s Dream and Elijah’s
Chariot in oil on wood panels is the breathtaking gift pre-
sented to Congregation Beth Yeshurun jointly by three
families.
To honor the occasion of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Wilkenfeld’s
Fiftieth Wedding Anniversary, their proud children, Dr. and
Mrs. Malcom Mazow, Dr. & Mrs. Jerome Wilkenfeld, Dr.
and Mrs. Byron Wilkenfeld, and Mr. Herschell Wilkenfeld
selected the interpretation of JACOB’S DREAM which is
mounted above the atrium lobby doors to the sanctuary.
The complementary section entitled ELIJAH AND THE
CHARIOT above the adjoining doors to Pulaski-Rauch
Auditorium is the thoughtful gift of Dr. and Mrs. Harold
Joachim who honored their children Susan, Lisa, Charlene
and David. Joining them in the presentation of this mag-
nificent panel was Mrs. Naomi Hutnik whose beautiful
gesture is in loving memory of both her husband, Nathan,
and their son, Alan.
The panels viewed as a whole are vivid portrayals alive
with color, leaving little doubt as to their subject interpreta-
tion.
Iraq-born Israeli artist, Shaoul Smira, who resides in
New York, came to Houston ih August to personally install
the individual panels that uniquely create the whole. Each
panel, if hung separately, would be a work of art in its
own right.
The idea for the panels germinated seven years ago and
the interpretations of several artists were rejected until Mr.
Smira’s conception, as sketched in small pictures, was
approved by the families under the guidance of Sidney Aron,
Chairman of the Art Committee who visualized the com-
plated project and how it would look affixed to a wall above
eye level.
Rabbi Jack Segal, Raphael Arbisser among others
conceived the Jacob theme. Shaoul Smira suggested the idea
of the Elijah panel.
Artist Smira immigrated to Israel in 1951 and studied
in Tel Aviv at the Avi Art Academy; on to Paris for more
study at the Chomer Academy, and, eventually to the United
States where he learned lithography.
He has had shows in Israel, Belgium, France, the
Netherlands, Germany, and in the United States. His public
commissions are ■ represented in New Jersey, Baltimore,
and Houston.
Mrs. Battia Smira, his wife, is an artist in her own right.
Her forte is metal sculptry. Both Mr. and Mrs. Smira will
be present when the gift panels are formally dedicated on
Sunday evening, November 2 at which time the Sisterhood of
Beth Yeshurun will host a reception.
