Heard contended the items played
a major role in the case because
they were found in the car when the
suspects were arrested.
The three suspects were arrested
in a car on U.S Highway 87 the mor-
ning of the robbery Two of the three
passengers in the car fit descriptions
of suspects given by Orme
Orme had testified that on the
morning of Oct 15 two Hispanic
males had entered the store at
Seadrift and Main streets to buy soft
drinks
When the two came to the counter,
one man pulled a gun and the other
jumped over the counter and took
cash and foodstamps from the store
register
The pair also demanded money
from the store safe, but when Orme
demonstrated that he could not open
the safe, they left
snow across the state
"Moist air is expected to begin
moving northwestward from the
Gulf of Mexico tonight, riding up and
over the cold air at the surface.”
McIntyre said "In addition,
moisture from the Pacific Ocean is
moving northeastward at even
higher levels across Mexico and into
Southwest Texas.”

< Editor's note: This is the second of a two-part
series on taxable Social Security benefits.!
People who had substantial income in 1984 in addi-
tion to their Social Security benefits may have to pay
federal income taxes on part of their benefits, Bruce
Tyler. Social Security manager in Victoria, said
recently Tyler estimates that only one in 10 persons
who received Social Security benefits in 1984 will ac-
tually owe any taxes on the benefits
To determine if any tax is owed on Social Security
benefits the first step is to figure countable income,’
Tyler explained Countable income includes all tax-
able income, plus non taxable interest, plus one-half
of 1984 Social Security benefits Couples filing a joint
return should be sure to include their combined in-
come and benefits, even if only one of them gets
Social Security
According to Tyler, if the total countable income is
less than the base amounts shown below for person’s
tax filing status. Social Security benefits are not sub-
ject to tax:
•$25,000 if a person files as a single taxpayer
•$32,000 combined income of married couple fil-
ing a joint tax return < Note: This may include people
recently widowed.)
•one half of the Social Security benefits of married
people who file separate returns, and who lived
together during some part of 1984 is subject to tax
The base amount is $0.00)
If countable income is more than these base

Use countable income' with taxes
amounts, the amount of benefits subject to tax is the
smaller of:
•one-half of countable income above the base
amounts, or,
•one half of the annual Social Security benefits
Thus, never more than one-half of Social Security
benefits is subject to tax, Tyler pointed out
Each of the 2,687 residents of Calhoun County who
received a Social Security benefit in 1984 will receive
a Social Security Benefit statement. Form SSA-1099,
before the end of January 1985. Tyler said The form
will show the amount of Social Security benefits
received in 1984 and any amount returned or paid
back The net figure provided should be used in figur
ing 'countable income ' A worksheet. IRS Notice 703,
which can be used to determine if any benefits are
taxable, will come with the Form SSA-1099
Tyler urged beneficiaries who need information
about the figures shown on the Form SSA-1099 to call
the Victoria Social Security office at 575-8252 Also, a
free booklet — Publication 915, Tax Information on
Social Security and Railroad Retirement Benefits —
is available at any Social Security or Internal
Revenue Service office, Tyler said.
If Publication 915 doesn't provide the answer to tax-
able income or tax liability questions. Tyler sug-
gested people contact local tax assistance volunteers
or call the toll-free IRS number for their area provid-
ed on the back of the Notice 703
