our fish to create new species, and
implanting our deer with genes to
make them grow bigger antlers, and
yet, ultimately, we often make
mistakes, sometimes with results
we don't see for many years. II is a
very exacting science, this business
1 enjoyed reading about the lellow
who caught tht* huge striped bass in
the Guadalupe River below Canvon
Dam last month It was especiail;.

while I was photographing some
trout stocking activities in that same
place, a huge striper came slashing
into the pool and devoured a large
number ot the disoriented trout that
had just been slocked. At this time,
the state personnel asked me not to
mention that particular incident,
since it would lie regarded as a hit ol
a setback ol their trout-slocking pro
gram
No matter how carefully we try to
manage our wildlife, things often go
awry Sometimes, it is simply a mat-
ter of changing priorities and accep-
ting the new direction, while other
times, we spend billions of dollars
trying to rectify the damage And
sometimes, we can't undo the in-
advertent damage.
