According to legend, the race has
been run in Olney since 1445, when a
woman dashed to church on Shrove
Tuesday still clutching her frying
pan with a pancake in it. Some say
the pancake may have been a bribe
to the bellringer to ring the bell
sooner to signal the start of celebra-
tions on the last day before Lent,
which traditionally include pan-
cakes.
In 1950, women in Liberal in
southwest Kansas began challeng-
ing Olney.

Olney takes
pancake race
LIBERAL, Kan (AP) - They
didn’t have to flip to pick the winner
of the annual Shrove Tuesday pan-
cake race. An English gym instruc-
tor easily defeated a Kansas
aerobics teacher to retain her title.
Lesley Byrne, 26, of Olney,
England, ran her hometown,
415-yard course, carrying a frying
pan with a pancake, in 62 seconds.
That was quicker than 23-year-old
Donetta Schindler, who beat 14
others on a similar Kansas course
with a time of 65.91 seconds
"My legs feel really bad. I thought
I was fitter because I’d been train-
ing. I’ll be coming back next year to
try for the hat-trick,” Mrs Byrne
said.
"I felt like I was in good position,"
said Mrs. Schindler, a former tennis
player at Liberal High School. "I
was ready for it, but I had not train-
ed that much.”

Republicans rallied today to defend
Defense Secretary designate John
Tower whose confirmation vote has
been delayed while the FBI in
veatigates al legations about his
drinking and his financial ties with
military contractors

cant that they have never seen him

and well confirm John Tower,
hopefully in the next couple ot
weeks.”
" The experience ot people, in-
cluding the chairman ot that (Arm-
ed Services' committee, have been
that they have never seen John
Tower impaired because ot drink
ing . They have never seen him
drunk, they have never seen him
unable to perform duty, never seen
him tail to show up tor an appoint-
ment," Sen Malcolm Wallop.
R-Wyo., said on "CBS This
Morning."
The committee chairman, Sen
Sam Nunn. D-Ga , said Wednesday
following a meeting with White

House counsel C. Boyden Gray that
he still had "serious concerns " that
would prevent him at this point from
voting in favor ot Tower s nomina-
tion.
"Each ot the charges that have
been leveled against him and in-
vestigated subsequently have all
proved groundless, baseless,"
Wallop said
But Sen Timothy Wirth, D-Colo..
appearing with Wallop, noted that
the White House asked that the vote
be put oft until the FBI completed its
investigation
Wirth said "to suggest that there
are a whole lot ot just silly accusa-
tions .. simply is not the information
that we re getting from the White
House ... Clearly they must believe
that there is something in these
reports or they would not have asked
us to put oft the vote. ’ ’
Nunn and Sen. John Warner ot
Virginia, the ranking Republican on
the Armed Services Committee met
for two hours Wednesday afternoon
with Gray to discuss the FBI in-
vestigations and then closeted
themselves with Tower lor 90
minutes
The Washington Host tixfay quoted
an unnamed administration source
as saying Tower presented the
lawmakers with statements from his
doctors that he does not have a
disabling alcohol problem
President Bush, meantime, stood
by his nomination ol the lormer
Texas senator to head the Pentagon
“If somebody has something other
than rumor and frenzied specula-
tion, please get it to the FBI or get it
to the White House stalt, or certainly
get it to the committee in the Senate
But let us be fair enough that we do
not deal in rumor after rumor,”
Bush said Wednesday
Nunn said “there are still some
matters yet to be received" in an
FBI review of allegations that
Tower is a heavy drinker and
womanizer
A separate FBI review ot “new
allegations ot a financial nature
will take another week or it) days" to
complete. Nunn said, adding that it
"has to be completed before the
committee can proceed to a vote. ”
The Senate begins a week long
recess on Friday, meaning the coin
mittee could not vote before Feb 21
wrangle.”
Senate Republican leader Bob
Dole of Kansas said he spoke with
Tower on the telephone Wednesday
morning and the nominee was
"hanging in there ”
Nunn said Tower’s alcohol con-
sumption remained
primary concerns "
"The question there is whether
there has been an alcohol abuse pro
biem If there has been a problem in
the past, is there a point where it has
been recognized by the nominee and
dealt with effectively? That is to
say, is it a continuing problem1' I do
not have an answer to that yet,
Nunn said.

Republicans rally to save Tower bid
to reject the nomination or send it to
the full chamber
A Republican on the committee,
John McCain ot Arizona, said the
new allegations linked Tower to a
Pentagon purchasing fraud in-
vestigation known as "III Wind,”
which has centered on payments by
defense contractors for classified in-
formation on lucrative military con-
tracts.
"It has to do with this procure
ment scandal, the III Wind’ thing,”
said McCain.
At the White House, press
secretary Marlin Fitzwater said the
main new allegation "relates to
Senator Tower's activities while he
was in the Senate,” but did not
elaborate.
Another administration official
said the FBI background inquiry
focused on contributions to one ot
Tower's Senate campaigns by a con-
tractor now under investigation in
the Pentagon purchasing fraud in-
vestigation.
But the official, speaking on condi-
tion ot anonymity, emphasized that
the FBI had found no evidence ot
wrongdoing by Tower and said
politicians can't control who gives
money to their campaigns
During lour days of testimony
before the committee, Tower denied
any financial wrongdoing But Nunn
and other senators have voiced con-
cern whether Tower could avoid con-
flicts of interests after receiving
more than $1 million as a consultant
lor major defense contractors since
he left the Senate four years ago
The administration had been
pushing for a vote this week, but
dropped that after Nunn and Warner
met Tuesday night with Bush
Nunn said he “told the president
frankly that I have serious concerns,
and I also stated that if a vote was
held immediately as some have urg
ed, I would vote no because of these
concerns.”
The chairman said he had not poll-
ed the committee, but the second-
ranking Democrat on the panel, Sen.
James Exon of Nebraska, said he
agreed with Nunn
Senate Republicans generally
defended the nominee Sen. William
Cohen of Maine said Democrats
should not allow the Tower nomina-
tion to turn into a "partisan
