above deck level She was a small
ship a the time of her building (1877
in Aberdeen. Scotland), but at 202
feet lond with a 28 foot beam and
carrying 12,000 sq. ft of sail, she'll
be one of the largest sailboats you'll
ever see. a sailboat with a cargo
capacity of 430 tons
And 430 tons of history is a lot of
history and that's what the Elissa
hauls now; big heaping mounds of
history carried deep in her hold and
spread all over her decks. You can
plunge your hands into sailing
history clear up to your elbows,
smell it, see it. rub it on your ears,
fill your pockets... all during the
Elissa’s visit at Palacios Harbor

THE THIELEN FAMILY of Port Lavaca has
recieved the Family Trefoil Award from the Paisano
Council of the Girl Scouts of America. The Trefoil
Award is presented to one family in the 23-county
district for outstanding service to the Girl Scouts. The
exibits, displays and refreshments
will be available for visitors Also on
sale will be a variety of souvenirs
and other memorabilia at the dock
to mark the occasion.
A fireworks display will conclude
the Elissa’s stay in Palacios at 7
p.m. Sunday. The ship will depart
Monday morning.
The unique visit is bring sponsored
by the Palacios Historical Associa-
tion, the Palacios ISD's Marine
Education Center, and the City of
Palacios Parks & Recreation Dept
During her 112-year career, the
tall-masted sailing barque Elissa
has sailed under the flags of six na-
tions over the seven seas to all four
corners of the globe carrying almost
any and every imaginable cargo
During what appeared to be the
twilight of her sea-going career, she
even smuggled cigarettes on the
Mediterranean
But that just appeared to be the
twilight of her career. The
Galveston Historical Foundation
rescued the. iron-clad Elissa from
the door of the scrapyard in 1974,
brought her back to Galveston from
Greece, and began a $4.5 million pro-
ject to bring her back to her original
glory They-primarily a dedicated
group of colunteers-reclaimed, they
repaired, they refurbished, rebuilt,
reformed, researched, retouched,
refined, rejuvenated, remodeled,
renaiied, and re-rivited.. and
reproduced the original as closely as
possible, right down to the birdeye
maple and teak trim. Now. after
thousands of skilled working hours,
everyone holds the museum ship
Elissa in high regards; she’s one of
the finest maritime restorations in
the entire country.
One of the reasons they call her
‘‘taH” is that her mainmast is 99 feet
