best years we have ever had.
We had $19,000 just in sponsor-
ships, so that pretty much cov-
ered the expenses as well as the
prize money. So anything we
made out here today is pretty
much all profit. I am really ex-
cited to see that,” Flores said.
The money raised in The
Harbor’s biggest fundraiser of
the year will go towards help-

This Fourth of July week-
end, the skies over Calhoun
County will be ablaze with col-
or and filled with the sounds of
explosives and patriotic music
with two fireworks shows and a
concert with all three events hap-
pening Saturday.
The United States Air Force
Band of the West from Lackland
Air Force Base in San Antonio
will perform during a free con-
cert at 6 p.m. at the Veterans
Memorial at Bayfront Peninsula
Park.
The City of Port Lavaca and
Port Lavaca Chamber of Com-
merce co-sponsored event will
kick off the concert band’s four-
day Fourth of July tour that will
also include performances in
Corpus Christi, Nederland and
culminate in Houston on July 4.
“We will play Americana
pieces, marches, vocal pieces and
pieces from musicals that people
will recognize,” said Staff Sgt.
Carolyn Sierichs, USAF Band of
the West flutist and concert band
operations representative. “The
concerts usually last between 70
and 90 minutes. The band fea-
tures flutes, clarinets, trumpets,
trombones and percussion.”
Sierichs said the base’s vari-
ous bands perform every Fourth
of July
“We like to get out into the
community to serve as a bridge
between the public and the mil-
itary to thank people for their
support of the military, and be a
positive influence,” she said.
One of the fireworks shows
starts at dark at the Bayfront
Park located at the end of Lamar
Street in Point Comfort.
Rhonda Wilkins, city secre-
tary for Point Comfort, said the
fireworks show, sponsored by
the City and the Point Comfort
Volunteer Fire Department, cele-
brates its 15th year this year.
“We cannot account for the
number of people who come to
the fireworks show, but the big
open field on the hill overlooking
the boat ramp is jam packed as
is the field next to the Catholic
Church, the pool parking lot and
on the sides of the road down
to the highway (State Highway
35),” Wilkins said.

Nine-year-old Jordyn
Brown, of Port Lavaca, had her
hands full this school year foster-
ing four kittens for the Calhoun
County Humane Society
Her family had adopted
their dog Oreo from the humane
society, and Jordyn also has a
pet cat, but caring for 2-week-old
kittens as a first time foster was
a different experience, said the
Jackson-Roosevelt Elementary
fifth grader.
“My mom showed it to me
on Facebook (the humane soci-
ety page). I asked my dad, and he
said it was OK,” Jordyn said.
“Their mommy had passed
away,” said Megan Brown, Jor-
dyn’s mother. “We just recently
brought them back. They were
old enough to eat dry food, so
they may have been eight weeks.”
Jordyn described fostering
animals as “fun.”
