Tombstone. Ariz. July 27 Automo-
bile travel between Tombstone and Bls-
bee is now confined to the Tombstone
canyon route the valley route being a
better route now for a boat than an
auto.
Doves are plentiful along- the San
Pedro and nlmrods report good suc-
cess. Bob French of Douglas was in the
county seat on legal matters.
John Mason Robs of Biabee. was In
town on legal matters and left for the
coast in the afternoon.
Dr. H. H. Hughart and wife has left
for Catalina Island where they 'will
summer . .
Mrs. Henrj Hausen has left for Globe
where she will join her husband and
make her future home.
Dr. Washington of Phoenix is in
Tombstone and will attend the clien-
tele of Dr Hughart who has gone to
the coast for the summer
Judge Fred M Sutter and bride are

The Occupants Escape With
Lives hy Being Absent
From Home.
La Jlesa. N M. July 27. The resi
dence of Sirs A. C Hoff was struck
by lightning during the storm of Mon-
day and completely thrown to tho
ground. Luckily Mrs. Hoff and son
were spending the evening with a
friend and thereby escaped what
would have been sudden death.
The most beneficial rain of the sea-
son fell the first of the week. It will
more than double the melon and bean
crops and no damage was done al-
falfa as the second crop was har-
vested and the third cutting will not
begin until next week. The rain has
been local.
K J. Evans has sold his home to Mr.
Lewis. Mr. Evans and family will
leave in a few weeks for WIllcox
Arizona where he will engage in the
mining business.
George Negler has returned to his
old borne in southern Mexieo
Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Williams are
spending a few days in El Paso.
Mrs. TV. I. Reynolds of Colorado
was here this week looking after ber
ranch interests Mrs. Reynolds ex-
pects to make this her home in tho
near future.
Mr. and Mrs H. F. Brown of Las
Cruces. are visiting Mrs. H. C Waugh.
Mesdames Forest a.nd Hilla White
are. visiting friends in El Paso.
Mrs. R. C. Reeder has returned from

School Election to Be Held
- at Safford on
August 3.
Safford Ariz.. July 27. The big cel-
ebration at Thatcher. In honor of
"Pioneer da" was a complete success
I In spite of muddy ground.
The narade was unlaue. among the
novel features being a pioneer's prairie
schooner drawn by a cow and a horse.
Many float representing early pioneer
life including log cabins and dug-
outs were to be seen and a band of
Indians added a characteristic touch.
The literary exercises were excellent.
The ball game was won by the east
end of the valley the west end headed
by Pima getting 7 runs to 9. The tug
of war was won by the seventies over
the elders. The Morris horse won the
principal race from the Clarldge mare.
An election will be held at the Saf-
ford school house August 3 to de-
termine whether the Safford and Lay-
ton school districts shall be consoli-
dated or not. a petition asking for
their consolidation having been pre-
sented to county school superintendent
Woods.
The Taylor-Williamson and the Bra-shears-Owen
meat markets will be
consolidated and ruri under one man-
agement after August' 1.
Jos. T. Oftelie a watchmaker and
W. Burton and family of Grand Falls.
Tex. arrived in Safford this week and
expect to make their home here.
A number of Safford people pic-
nicked on Try Canyon.
Rev. t. Carl "Williams will be at
the Baptist church Sunday.

Perry Lathrop. manager of Gila Val-
ley bank spent a day at Gamp Incep-

Wheeling. W. V. July 27. Many per-
sons wera injured late yesterday when
200 Masons and their families. seaJUtd. on
a wooden platform covering a small T-
vtne In front of an open air theater at
Wheeling park were precipitated- tov
the ground by the collapse of the struc-
ture. The drop to the- bottom or the ravine
was 15 feet. Thirty persons were se-
verely hurt. One of these. Miss Elsie
Little of Benwood W Va sustained a
brolten back and will die. "The others
received fractures of the arms limbs
and bruises.
An examination showed that the
posts sustaining the platform had
rotted from running water beneath.

Marfa Country
Marfa. Tex July 27. Owing to the
fact that the candidates for county and
precinct offices are staying out of the
Democratic primaries and to a further
fact that the state and district candi-
dates for office can be assessed only
SI each for primary expenses the funds
In the eight precincts of Presidio
county are very short and no primaries
will be held for the county officers
but primaries for the state officers are
being held today.
Dr. Mahon health offleer and "Vv". W.
Bogel. county Judge are working to
prevent the smallpox from getting on
this side of the river. All the children
have been vaccinated. There have been
about 25 deaths at Hacienda Mex but
only three have been found on this
side of the river and they have been
under strict quarantine.
The St. Mary's parochial school will
open on Tuesday. Sept. 3. The school
will have three main divisions: Board-
ing school English parochial depart-
ment and Spanish parochial depart-
ment . . .
