Gainesville residents no longer have to boil their
water before consumption.
City Manager Barry Sullivan said the boil notice was
lifted on Tuesday after being issued on Sunday due to a
12 inch water line break in the 500 block of S. Weaver
Street.
A Code Red warning about the main break issued
around 4:20 p.m. Sunday stated a water outage was
expected to last approximately six hours.
Sullivan said “most of the city” was impacted and
there is no cause for why the old cast iron line broke.
“ft just broke,” he said, while adding there was no
construction going on at the time of the break.
Sullivan said the "system was back at full pressure" at
1 a.m. Monday and 10 feet, two inches of line was
replaced with PVC pipe.
Since the pressure in the line dropped, the boil notice
was issued as a precautionary measure, city officials said.
Sullivan stressed there was nothing ever wrong with
the city’s water.
“We never found any issues with our water. The issue
was with the system,” he said.
Sullivan said whenever a boil water notice is issued,
one needs to follow it.
He said in his eight and a half years with the city, he
has “never” had to issue a boil water notice before.
