Doming- X. M.. April 23. This is the
era of large devel ;mt.nt in the Mira-
bres valley. In aiditicn to the hun-
dreds of individual farmers v. ho are
developing tracts of :0. r0. I 'JO. and ISO
acres the Rio Mimbres Irrigation com-
pany is developing its immense hold-
ings at the rate of 5000 acres per year
and the Mimbres Valley AlfaJ'a. Farms
company at its present rate cT develop-
ment will have 10006 acres under olow
and water wihtin 12 months from this
time. - sfu
The Homeplot company comes for-
ward now with a proposition to develop
Kfi tracts nf 20 acres each within a mile
i and two miles of town. Many features
whole plan is something new to .New
Mexico. The holdings oi this company
lie in a half circle about th.2 town if
Deming. where the average depth to
water is about 50 feet. The soil is a
rich sandy loam ideal for ihe truck-
grower vineyard man and orchiu-dlst.
it all lies within the compass of the
high power transmission lines and can
consequently be served with electric
power for pumping.
Home for Knch Homesecker.
The plan that senator .Laughren has
decided upon and the accomplishment
of which he has already begun is to
provide a 20 acre home ready Tor ihe
homeseeker to step into and which can
be made productive from the very start.
Each tract will first be plowed har-
rowed and leveled. It will then ie
wire fence. The well will be put down 1
and the pit down to 50 reet be wauea up
with concrete making it everlasting. A
smaller hole will be bored in the bottom
of the pit. puncturing sufficient water
bearing gravel to secure the desired
flow. This hole will be cased with the
heaviest screen to allow ready access of
the water and at the same time be ab-
solutely permanent. The best pump on
the market will be installed and oper-
ated with an electric motor. In order
to get the advantage of a low power
cost the instalatton will be small and
a rtsecvoir. of 125.000 gallon capacity
provided so that the motor can be op- i
erated continuously nigral ana aay cur-
ing the pumping season thus getting
a rate of 2.8 cents ber kilowat. The
reservoir will not only serve as a catch-
ment space for night pumping but will
provide a place where the family can
raise enough fish to supply their needs.
A number of homesteaders have already
proved that this is entirely practicable
by doing it. To the discharge pipe of
each well will be a T connection by
which the water can be pumped into a
galvanized iron tank raised sufficiently
to give pressure water for all domestic
uses.
Slake Concrete on the Ground.
The dwelling construction on each of
these tracts is also out of the ordinary.
The company owns 60 acres along the
river north of town which for a long
time was considered practically value-
less. It has turned out how that the
gravel and sand from this tract is ad-
mirably adapted to making concrete. A
power revolving screen Js being in-
stalled with tramways from the gravel
pits so that the gravel pebbles and
sand can be screened and separated
with one operation and the material
taken from its bed at a minimum of ex-
pense. From this material poured con-
crete blocks are made which are used
in the construction of the houses. The
house which the company has already
completed is on the old mission style
characteristic of this section with four
rooms and bath and celler. wired for
electricity and plumbed for hot and
cold water. The other houses will be
one room larger with the same conven-
iences and varied in architecture to re-
lieve any monotony.
Underground Distribution.
The underground distribution system
for the Irrigation water is another at-
tractive feature. Cement pipes are laid
16 inches under ground and distributed
over the entire tract for conducting
the water without loss by seepage or
evaporation to the point where it is
to be applied.
Four of these tracts are being pre-
pared at present one house is com-
pleted and two more of these 20 acre
homes will be begun next week. Six of
them will be completed within SO days
and the present program includes 25 be-
fore the end of the -year and the re-
mainder 4iext year.
