28, 1943 Carl Thompson and
Gary Blake, missionaries in Ad-
dis Ababa, Ethiopia, met with
an Ethiopian native named
Shongeh Sadaybo who claimed
•hat there were 29 congrega-
tions meeting and worshipping
in the interior of Ethiopia, us-
ing only the Bible as a guide.
Thompson wont into the in-
terior with Sadaybo to check on
the story and upon his return
filed a report to the
CHRONICLE vorifyingthe
claim. — —

ADDIS ABABA. Ethiopia
(CNS) — Two hundred miles,
the distance from Addis Ababa
to the Sidamo province in South-
ern Ethiopia. Were there really
congregations worshiping after
the New Testament orddr in Si-
damo as we had been told? Lfa-
nie Darden and I made this trip,
anxious to learn the answer to
this question.
Accompanied by Girma Yo-
hannes, bur translator. Ato
Shongeh Sadaybo directed us to
our destination. Ato Shongeh
had brought the startling news

with the elders, preachers and
members of the Heeda and
Kaege congregations.
Unfortunately this visit was
short so many of our questions
remain unanswered. However,
we were able to confirm and
establish a number of basic and
important facts. We had found
the true church I
First in importance is that
they accept the Bible only for
doctrine and teaching. They are
independent of any mission
group and generally free from
denominational concepts.
They teach and practice bap-
tism by immersion of adult be-
lievers for the remission of sins.
Their worship on Sunday con-
sists of singing, prayers, Bible
instruction and giving. The
Lord's supper is observed
monthly.
These congregations are au-
tonomous and self-supporting
with a plurality of elders or-
dained in each congregation. As
a result of our contact with
these people we realize we are
brethren together in Christ. The
New Testament church truly

cently in the interior of Ethiopia meet each Sunday in
grass-thatched huts like the one pictured above. The con-
gregation which meets in this hut decided recently to
build a new meeting house since this one is in such bad

K. Alley of Shelbyville, Tenn., Bob Marshall of Corpus
Christi, Tex., James D. Willeford of Abilene, Tex., and j
H. A. Dixon of Henderson, Tenn. |
Alley was recently added to
the York College staff as chair- breaking ceremony for the new |
man of the Department of Bible.
The theme of the 1963 Lec-
tureship is “Recruiting and
Training Soldiers for the King-
dom.”
In addition to the daily lec-
tures. other special events will
fill out the agenda. These
include classes, mission reports,
performances by the York Col-
lege A Cappella Chorus, men’s
fellowship dinner, women’s fel-
lowship, dinner and the ground

gregations situations exist which
contribute to these errors.
The illiteracy rate is very
high, probably as high as 98
or 99 percent. The Amharic lan-
guage is the official language of
Ethiopia, therefore to print the
Bible in the Sidamo or Wolamo
languages is illegal.
A thorough knowledge of the
Bible is limited and various mis-
