Sno balls for a cause
Megan Gray-Hatfield/GainesviIle Daily Register
Friends Ariannah Kemp, Sabrina Kennedy and Samantha Calhoun said they were lured
to SnoBall Gainesville on Thursday afternoon so they could beat the heat. Kennedy
enjoyed a snow cone in a Cowboys for CASA cup. Monies raised from the color-changing
cups will be donated to CASA, according to the snow cone stand's management. A tip jar
is also collecting funds for CASA. The stand is at the corner of North Taylor and Broadway
streets and is open from 2 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday.

The Gainesville Independent
School District’s property
casualty insurance premium
could increase about 15 percent
for the upcoming year.
Members of the Gainesville
ISD’s Board of Directors agreed
last month to extend the district’s

Scarbrough, Medlin & Associates
Inc. even though the company is
predicting the increase.
Interim Superintendent Larry
Smith said the district entered an
agreement with the company last
year. They were the lowest of the
two submitted proposals with a
premium of $145,278.
The other vendor, the Texas
Association of School Boards Risk
Management fund, proposed a
premium of $183,120, according
to information provided to board
members.
As a part of last year’s
agreement with Scarbrough,
Medlin & Associates, they have
a two-year extension possibility,
Smith said.
He said the increase to the
premium is due to “the hurricanes

burn ban ordinance that was signed by members of
the Cooke County Commissioners’ Court on July 23,
according to Fletcher.
The ordinance states one must have at least 25 feet
in all directions cleared of debris, vegetation and
combustible materials before performing any welding
or hot work. It also says one must have a minimum of
100 gallons of water on hand with a way to apply the
water.
Fletcher said the violator could be fined up to $500
and pay court costs.
Era, Valley View, Muenster and Myra volunteer fire
departments, as well as Precinct 3, responded to the
blaze that jumped across FM 922, he said.
Earlier in the day — at 2 a.m. — Whitesboro, Indian
Creek and Callisburg volunteer fire departments went
out to what was initially believed to be a grass fire in
the 500 block of Roe Road, Fletcher said.
When firefighters arrived, they found a double-wide
