CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND PARENTS/FAMILIES THEREOF
Wheeler is loaded (therefore blessed) with children and young people. That's the good
news. Activities for children and youth often collide or overlap. That's the bad news. To
make sure that we maximize harmony and minimize conflict, your church has a Youth
Council, a Minister to Children, a Minister to Youth, and an Associate Pastor who
oversees children's and youth activities. If you belong to, or work with, any children's or
youth group, you must work with the Youth Council, which meets every fourth Monday
at 7:00 p.m. in Multipurpose Room II. No activity, meeting, or expenditure 'will be
honored unless it passes through the Youth Council Contact Youth Council President
Gerald Barnett, and get plugged in!
TOMORROW NIGHT BEGINS REVIVAL
.. that is, if you beseech God to send an outpouring! The Whalums: Rev. Kenneth, Sr.,
and Jr., will be with us Monday through Friday evening, at 7:00 p. m. each evening. This
dynamic father-and-son team have an uncanny chemistry that makes their message
synchronize like a fine-tuned instrument, and provides a one-two punch in colorful and
penetrating messages. Today and tomorrow, pray for Holy Ghost power; and invite
family, neighbors, and friends. Then all this week, expect the cascade of blessings you
prayed for. The Whalums are back in Houston!
TODAY WE CELEBRATE OUR SPIRITUAL ANCESTRY
Our natural ancestry is African, and the dominant religion on our mother continent is
Islam. But we have chosen to follow the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and the
teachings of Jesus. All of these men, plus Moses, David, and all the prophets, contributed
to a faith tradition called Judaism, out of which came Christianity. There is a close
connection, therefore, between Christians and Jews. Also those of us who are African
American share with Jews a long history which includes slavery and discrimination. So
during this "Month of Mutual Respect," proclaimed by the Anti-Defamation League and
the City of Houston, black and Jewish people are reaching out to each other as brothers
and sisters of faith. We welcome to the Wheeler pulpit at our 11:00 o'clock service today
Rabbi Jack Segal, the venerable spiritual leader of Congregation Beth Yeshurun. (We will
visit Beth Yeshurun on the Sabbath evening of Friday, October 20, and would like for you
to join us there — 4525 Beechnut, near Loop 610 — 7:00 p. m. -- especially members of
our boys' and girls' rites of passage programs; the Congregation will Bat Mitzvah two
young women that evening.) The prophet Amos gave Hell to the people of Samaria, Jack
— you are our prophet today; we expect you to 'tell it like it is' to us, too! Welcome to
Wheeler!
