others. Invariably all the butters made in the north and west are adul-

deteriorate so that they are not fit for the table. Not so with the ab-

A
weather bureau in Washington yesterday
afternoon, beginning five minutes and
twenty seconds past 7 p. m., seveftty-
fifth Meridian time. Complete and perfect
records were pbtained of the north, south,
east and west movements of the earth.
The earth tremors at Washington were
of comparatively slow and deliberate mo-
tion, each complete movement covering
from 18 to 40 seconds of time. The earth-
quake lasted continuously for several
hours, and finally ceased about m;d-night.
The most violent shock occurred at seven
hours, forty-two minutes and twenty-six
seconds in the P. m.
From the press reports this evidently
is the record of the great Chilean earth-
quake of Aug. 16. and is the heaviest re-
corded in Washington since the San Fran-
cisco earthquake.
