With Lone Oak attempting a game-
winning pass, Jaron Gage and Nick
Vallecilla combined on a sack on the
game’s final play, and the Tiger JV
earned a nail-biting 30-28 victory
Thursday night in Whitewright.
Marching down the field on a 10-play
65-yard drive, Whitewright took a 30-
22 lead with just over a minute to play.
However, the quick-striking Lone
Oak offense needed just two plays to
cover 77 yards to narrow the margin to
30-28. Riley Ferron’s tackle for a loss
stopped the potential tying PAT run.
The visiting Buffaloes weren’t done
yet, though, successfully converting an
onside kick to take possession at their
own 48-yard line with 45 seconds to
play. Two plays later Lone Oak had a
first down at the Tiger 17. The first-
down pass fell incomplete with three
seconds left. Gage and Vallecilla’s sack
on the final play sealed the Tiger win.
Whitewright opened the scoring on
the game’s second play when Riley
Ferron raced 72 yards for a touchdown.
Tailback Ayden Farrington added
the two points for an 8-0 lead. zAfter
a defensive stop, the Tigers were
rolling to another score when a Lone
Oak safety stripped the football from
Farrington and raced 77 yards for a
touchdown. Ferron stopped the two-
point conversion, to preserve the lead.
Farrington immediately made up for
the miscue by racing 71 yards with the
ensuing kickoff for a TD, and Dylan
Harbardier’s two-point run was good
for a 16-6 lead.
Thanks to three completions and a
pass interference penalty against the
Tigers, Lone Oak narrowed the margin
to 16-14 thanks to a 7-yard TD pass
and a PAT run.
The Tigers added to their lead late
in the third quarter when quarterback
zAaron Pitt connected with Ferron on
a 45-yard scoring play that featured a
nifty cross-field cutback by the Tiger
fullback. Pitt added the two points on
the ground.
Lone Oak answered with a 55-yard
scoring drive and two-point conversion
that drew the score to 24-22. However,
Whitewright answered with a 65-yard
drive of its own, ending on Farrington’s
13-yard touchdown run. The two-point
pass play fell incomplete, but the Tigers
led 30-22 with just over two minutes
remaining.
