"It would solve one problem,
but would create others in park-
ing the cars and an increase in
accidents," Duckworth said.

than any other junior college in
Texas. But we have more than 700
students a semester taking phil-
osophy courses here, and we
anticipate this number to reach
1,000 next year.
"Even though the department
is described as having one of the
largest course offerings in the
state, there is a possibility of
hiring a new professor to teach
the philosophy of American
people," Hoyt said.
A new, complete entity, the
philosophy department, now se-
parated from the psychology de-
partment, is undermanned. Five
men teach six subjects ranging
from logic to contemporary
moral issues.
"There is a definite need for
additional instructors in the de-
partment," Dr. Harold Hoyt, de-
partment chairman, said.
"I would suspect that we have
a larger philosophy department
ing spaces to 3,372. When the
re-striping is finished, the col-
lege is expected to have 3,500
spaces.
"We hope to add 500-600
more spaces next year," Duck-
worth said.
Fifteen thousand parking per-
mits have been issued, but about
120 cars per day are issued
tickets for not having a park-
ing permit.

College adds 500 parking spaces
with re-striping of campus areas
Students save $224 a year by
buying a $1 parking permit.
For buying land, paving and
striping it, the estimated cost
per parking space on campus
is $225.
"Parking is a problem that
we will never solve. We get
500 new spaces, and 2,500 more
students enroll," Frank Duck-
worth, director of plant security,
said.
Five hundred new spaces were
added with the re-striping of
lots, bringingthe number of park-

ary parking permit from the sec-
urity office.
Eleven new light poles were
added to lot J on San Pedro
Avenue last week to help keep
the lots well lighted.
All parking lots have lighting,
but some are not adequately I ight-
ed, Duckworth said. The rest
of the lighting will be finished
in the near future.
"The purpose of the lighting
is to safeguard students and cars
and to assure students of a
safe arrival and departure from
campus at night.
"Very little theft of equipment
and automobiles on campus has
occured so far," Duckworth said.
One solution to the parking
problem is a high-rise parking
building, but it would have to be
funded privately because state
or federal
permitted.
"It would help. It would be
tremendous. But it would have
to be hazardous with people who
can’t drive well enough and the
