The Texas 80th Legislature reg-
ular session is in full swing and
the Higher Education Committees
of the house and senate are busy
considering bills.
In the house there are nine
members in the Higher Education
Committee who include Reps.
Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria; Brian
McCall, R-Plano; Fred Brown,
R-Bfyan; Roberto R. Alonzo, D-
Dallas; Jimmie Don Aycock, R-
Austin; Helen Giddings, D-De
Soto; Donna Howard, D-Austin;
Diane Patrick, R-Arlington and
Patrick M. Rose, D-Austin.
In the senate, members include
Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo;
Sen. Kip Averitt, R-Waco; Sen. Dan
Patrick, R-Houston; Sen. Royce
■ West, D-Dallas and Sen. Tommy
Williams, R-Marshall. ■
Among the 66 bills from the
house and 38 from the senate, sev-
eral have taken center stage.

from Chancellor Bruce Leslie
Monday focused on three.
HB 3934 sponsored by Rep.
Ruth Jones McClendon/ D-
San Antonio, would create a
tracking system known as the
Student Success Pathway to fol-
low students from San Antonio
School District through the Alamo
Community College District and
on to the University of Texas at
San Antonio.
HB 956 sponsored by Rep. Scott
Hochberg, D-Houston, aims to
.reduce the cost of college textbooks
to students by requiring texts be
used for at least three years, pub-
lisher discounts to bookstores be
passed on to students and textbook
selections be posted on Web sites
to allow students the opportunity
to comparison shop, among other
measures.
HB 3828 sponsored by Rep.
Geanie Morrison, R-Victoria, sup-
ports the governor’s proposal
for incentive-based funding for
institutions of higher education.
Funding formulas will consider
retention, number of transfer stu-
dents and number of graduates.
