More than 140,000 prisoners of
war are now held in 56 perma-
nent camps in the U. S., the War
Department has reported. The
ratio of Germans to Italians is
approximately three to cne. In
addition to the permanent camps
there are many temporary ones
set up to house prisoners in
areas with labor shortages. Ag-
ricultural work done by pris-
oners include harvesting fruit,
tomatoes, potatoes, peanuts, cot-
ton, sugar beets and corn. Only
a few prisoners .have escaped
and every one of them has been
recaptured in a few hours.
Irrigate More Farm Land
War food production will be
increased materially by 1945
through the extension of irriga-
tion service to nearly 800,000
acres of land cn 13 Bureau of
Reclamation Projects in Arizona,
California, Oregon, Colorado,
Idaho, Sc.uth Dakota, Utah, and
Washington, the Secretary of the
Interior announced recently.

More Paints for Civilians
Cicilian requirements for es-
sential paints and varnishes will
be more nearly met as a result
of the recent amendment cf Food
Distribution Order 42, the WPB
has reported. The order increas-
ed from 50 per cent to 60 per
cent the amount of drying oils
that can be consumed in paints,
