DETROIT. — President Johnson
opened his campaign for election to
a full term in the White House here
Labor Day with a summons to na-
tional unity, brotherhood among
men and understanding among na-
tions.
Speaking to a Labor Day rally in
downtown Detroit’s Kennedy Square,
the Chief Executive called for a
unity of purpose and action directed
at achieving three goals he said are
the common desire of most Ameri-
cans: Prosperity, justice and peace.
Adhering to his plan of avoiding
partisanship and political jabbing in
his campaign statements, Johnson
limited his criticism of Senator Bar-
ry Goldwater to a single oblique at-
tack on the Republican nominee’s
views on nuclear weapons.
“There is no such thing as conven-
tional nuclear weapons,” the Presi-
dent said, in apparent allusion to a
Goldwater speech in Cleveland Aug.
24 before the Veterans of Foreign
Wars. The Republican nominee, ar-
guing the tactical usefulness of low-
yield atomic arms to the veterans
group, described them as “conven-
tional,” an adjective generally re-
stricted to non-nuclear explosives.
