June 12, 1957,1 gave birth to a
child who "marched to a different
drummer." He was a rebel, like his
mom and like his dad ...yet differ-
ent from them both.
I predicted then that if he didn't
shape up he'd goosestep his way
right into the unemployment line
or the boys' reform school.
As a tiny child, he wandered
away from the front yard to go see to work in a garden, and raises
Santa Claus, taking his dog, and vegetables enough for the whole
community every summer.
He loves people, and is never
happier than when he is surround-
ed by friends and family, cooking
out for them; but he also enjoys his
solitude, fishing alone at a favorite
quiet spot -- though he never catch-
es a fish.
All animals love him , and I've
never known him to be cruel to
any one or anything. He is known
for his responsible and dependable
attitude toward job and family,
and his talent with wood. He is a
chief, and others follow him
willingly, because he leads with
understanding and patience.
He is fiercely independent, and
oftentimes walks in a different rut
from the one his mom and dad
walk in..
But with his trust and zest for
living, who am I to say that the
drummer he marches to will not
take him wherever he chooses to
go?

He never had any of the child-
hood diseases, except tonsilitis,
which he would develop on a mo-

vomiting, and deliriousness.
Parents are awed by genius, ad-
just to the average child, and are
compassionate toward the slow
learner. But the child who stands
apart and is none of these things
only puzzles, confuses, and tries
their patience.
They fear for the future of this
rare, unpredictable child who is
not only out of step with the world,
but if there's a puddle or a pile in
front of him, will step in it.
So what has happened to this
child-turned-man whose destiny
filled us with such apprehension?
He grew up during the Vietnam
war, in wonderment at the conflict
and hippies. .. and in a sense, was
one of those; he forgot birthdays
and special occasions, but when he
remembered, the gifts were warm
and personal. He set a record for
