Kaufman ,Texas.—Mr. and Mrs.
James B. Willard -were found dead in
their bed at 3 o’clock Sunday after-
noon. Their heads had been beaten
to a pulp, presumably with an ’ iron
poker which was found in the room.
Indications are that they were almost
instantly killed. Mr. Willard’s feet
were hanging off the side of the bed,
while Mrs. Willard was lying as it’
asleep. Both were in their night
clothes.
Mr. Willard was 65 years old and
was a prosperous farmer living eight
miles east of Kaufman on the Canton
road. No clue to the perpetrators has
been found.
Then, there results a drink of de-
licious flavor which many prefer

drink may be made strong or

_____--------
“Charles,” said a sharp-voiced wom-
an to her husband in the smoking
compartment, “do you know that you
and I once had a romance on a train?”
“Never heard of it,” replied Charles,
in a subdued tone.
' “Lthought you hadn’t, but don’t you
reinember 'it-was a pair of slippers I
presented to you the'Qiristmas before
we were married that led tlr-aur union?
You remember how nicely they'-fiited,
don’t you? Well, Charles, one aa^
when we were going to a picnic, you
had your feet upon a seat, and when
you weren’t looking I took your meas-
ure. But for that pair of slippers I
don’t believe we’d ever have been mar-
ried.”
A young, unmarried man, sitting
near by with a girl, immediately re-
moved his feet from the seat.
Doctors have found by experienc#
that no' medicine for colds and influ-
enza can be depended upon for full ef-
fectiveness until the liver is made thor-
oughly active. That is why the first
step in the treatment is the new, nausea-
less colomel tablets called Calotabs,
which are free from the sickening and
weakening effects of the old style calo-
mel. Doctors also point out the fact
that an active liver may go a long way
, towards preventing influenza and is one
of the most important factors in en-
abling the patient to successfully with-
stand an attack and ward off pneu-
monia.
One CalotaL on the tonguo at bed
time with a swallow of water—that’s
all. No salts, no nausea nor the slight-
est interference with your eating, pleas-
ure or work. Next morning your cold
has vanished, your liver is active, youi
system is purified, and you are feeling
fine, with a hearty appetite for break-
fast. Druggists sell Calotabs only in
Original sealed packages, price thirty-
five cents. Your money will be cheer-
fully refunded if you do not find them
delightful.—(Adv.)
Paris.—Aristide Briand has succeed-
ed in forming a new cabinet, and a
government which shall continue re-
sponsive to the'policies of President
Millerand is apparently assured.
Miilerand forced through his pro-
gram of maintaining a government
that would follow him in his plan of
continuing to work with the allies in
so far as the subject of German rep-
arations is conserned, in spite of great
pressure demanding that former Pres-
ident Poincare be named premier, and
adoption of his policy of practical
force against Germany. Millerand
stands for moderation, Poincare for
pressing the collection of indemnity
from Germany and the adoption of
stringent measures to guarantee its
early payment.
Washington.—Gathering opposition
:o the committee bill on reapportion-
ment, increasing the house member- /
ship to 482 members, is forecast and '
that the increase will be defeated /
when the house takes up the Siegel '
bill this week, as is now the program ’
of the congressional leaders. The
best indication is that the house will
either be retained at its present num-
ber, 435, -or given an increase of two
or three members. In any event Tex-
as will receive one additional mem-
ber; the apportionment of Oklahoma
will remain as at present, eight mem-
bers. While at the outset sentiment-•
was counted strong’y in favor of in-
creasing the membership, the consid-
eration of annual expense attending
the increase and the apparent impos-
sibility of furnishing quarters for such
new members is regarded as having
altered the viewpoint of a majority of
the members. Added to this was the
work of a coterie that had been in
favor of a marked reduction of the
present membership. But once in the
history of the country has the size of
the house of representatives been re-
duced,- that being in 1840 when ten
districts were wiped out.
It has been pointed out that to in-
crease ta the figure stated, would
mean an added annual expense of
more than $1,000,000. The salaries
of members would be increased $360,-
000, clerk hire would amount to $175,-
000, the mileage would be advanced
by $240,000, postage and message
franks another $240,000, stationery
$6,000, and additional force for main-
tenance of quarters would be hoisted
$70,000.
