Speedy’s feelings were hurt
that 1 refused her fresh gift
and she put it down. Our
good old Goldie Dog grab-
bed it up and made off with
it, thank goodness. Speedy,
like all our animals, is a
little strange. She doesn’t
answer to “Kitty, Kitty”
where she and I have to yodel for her
to come in for her supper,
sometimes for several min-

a previous position.
Political promises, how-

seems unlikely that he
would get excited and pur-

another four years.

PERSONALS
Mike Moore of Eudora,
Kans., has just returned
home after spending some
time with his grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Red Moore.
While here, he went deep
sea fishing off the Gulf
coast with his father, Don
Moore, of Dallas.
Annette Woody and chil-
dren, Clinton and Rebecca,
of Douglas, Georgia, are
visiting her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Johnny Burkhal-
ter and Mark. Annete’s
husband, Ernie, is pastor of
a Bible Church in Douglas.
Mark Stripling, our
youngest son, has been
named pastor of the Qua-
nah Assembly of God
Church in Quanah, Texas.
That puts him about two
hundred miles closer to
home and we will get to
watch this granddaughter
grow up, maybe. Our other
two grandchildren are Air
Force brats and we missed
out on their baby days.
Mr. and Mrs. G.W. Scott
of Sherman came down to
the store one night last
week and ate barbecue with
us. They have just returned
from a vacation trip to
Odessa, where they
sponged off George’s sis-
ter, Beulah, and brother-in-
law O.H. Hefner, for sever-
al days. The Scotts and
Hefners are old friends of
ours or they were, before
this article was written.
Carol Jean (Kilgroe)
Brown and son David, of
Mesquite, were down to the
store on Saturday. They
had been cleaning off her
mother’s and grandmother
Kilgroe’s cemetery lots and

CHANGING ATTITUDES ABOUT DWI
Few things in this coun-
try have changed as much
during the past few years as ones, and perhaps personal
public attitudes on drunk '
drivers. It is a change we
can all be thankful for.
Most of that change, in
my opinion, can be attrib-
uted to the organization of
Mothers Against Drunk
Drivers (MADD), and the
attendant publicity and edi-
torial support they have
received from our news-
papers. They have suc-
ceeded, where others have
failed, in drawing attention
to the tragedy that has
claimed the lives of thou-
sands of Texans.
It was not long ago, for

sen a hotter day. They were
both wet with sweat. Carol
Jean is my cousin and still
is one of the sweetest
people I know.
Susan Vance, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Wayne
Spice, has returned home
from Medical Plaza hospital
in Sherman,
underwent surgery for po-
lips in her throat. This is
the second time she has
undergone this surgery and
as one might imagine, it is
a very painful ordeal.
FIELD MICE, ANYONE?
We have been back here
ten years now, and with a
little help from our friends,
some of whom are older
than we, we are learning to
watch the “signs” where
weather is concerned. Oh, I
don’t mean we count the
hairs on the catterpillars,
but the field mice are trying
to act like indoor mice, and
that makes us think we will
have an early fall. I called
my cat last week to come
eat her supper and she
came running up the back
steps with a live and kick-
ing mouse in her mouth.
The cat’s name is
Speedy, but when I see a
mouse, I’m not exactly
slow, myself and 1 slammed
the door just in time.
