Sincere Friendship of

od Stephen A. Douglas' which forge.
a new link to bind together the mem-

If was prepared by lhank E. Stevens of
Sycamore 111.
Mr. Stevens related that when Lincoln
was to bo inaugurated in Washing on.
the first time "it was intimated that
Mrs. Lincoln was to be snubbed by
Washington society absenting itself.
Douglas a social favorite let it be
j known at once that the Douglases would
undertake to spoil the little plot and to
the utmost of his ability be did by es-
corting Mrs. Lincoln to the ball-room
upon his arm.
Sincere friendship
“But the crowning manifestation of
that sincere friendship was exhibited
quietly almost innocently at the de-
livery of Lincoln’s inauguration speech
when Lincoln ascending the rostrum of
steps awkwardly enough was looking I
for a place to lay his tall silk hat.
Douglas noticed the embarrassment
an.i as though expected of him he
reached for it and held it during .he
delivery of the speech to which he
listened intently.
"It was the speech of his friend and
j neighbor; his great and successful
| rival in it he felt an interest which
