What is the real meaning of the Cemetery Sales Campaign now being conducted
by a Special Committee, headed by Sidney Ladin?
Have any of you ever read the beautiful poem by Longfellow, entitled "The
Jewish Cemetery at Newport?" Here are a few lines from it:
"How strange it seems! These Hebrews in their graves,
close by the street of this fair seaport town,
Silent beside the never-silent waves,
At rest in all this moving up and down!
The very names recorded here are strange,
Of foreign accent, and of different climes;
Alvares and Rivera interchange
With Abraham and Jacob of old times. (9
How came they here? . . . “
We who live today as members of Congregation Beth Israel may, in the same
sense expressed by Longfellow, record the purpose of our Committee: to continue
the glory and the honor9 the dignity and theUness of one of the basic Congrega-
tional functions. This finds its form in a beautiful Garden of Memories, and in a
stately Mausolem of Rest, where we propose to write history for generations yet to
come.
The dedicated workers of our Committee are exerting a truly religious effort with-
in the framework of our Congregation and with a sense of being a Brother's Keeper.
They are helping a Religious Brother to get his house in order against the surest of
contingencies, something which can happen most unexpectedly, something which
often removes the younger, rather than the older. How good it is to shield our loved

ship dues to cover the loss. This heavy annual burden is unnecessary, and may be rW
moved if our members will act now toward purchase of a minimum total of $80,000
in cemetery sales. That amount, added to our Perpetual Care Fund and wisely invested,
will produce the income necessary to eliminate the operating loss.
All of you have received the Congregations letter, and have notice "Von6 elanned
increase in Cemetery prices. This notice is official, being based on action by your
Board of Trustees; but under its terms there is still opportunity for purchase at the
present prices. So, when Sidney Ladin's Cemetery Consultants call upon you . . .
please work with them, and give the matter the full, immediate consideration it war-
rants. In so doing, you will not only be helping yourself, but also your beloved
Congregaton.
Let us, with true dignity and thoughtfulness, provide - - - ahead of need!
