NAVY DAY TO
1 BE OBSERVED
(Special to The Herald >
HARLINGEN Oct. 30. — Navy
Day. which Is to be observed Sat-
urday Oct. 27 was first celebrated
in 1332 and was sponsored by the
Navy League of the United States.
•mottling to H. 8. Sanchas navy
meruttlng officer.
The League Is a voluntary aaso-
ctation of individuals who seek to
place Information about the navy
before the cittsens of the country.
They sought to establish at l»*st
one day each year as Navy Day.
They chose October 27 this year
for two reasons. It was on tha:
•ay In 1779 that members of the
Continental Congress Introduced
the first navy bill which called
for some 19 sloops brigs etc. It
also marks the birth of Theodore
Roosevelt in 1858. He adopted
preached and pursued an aggres-
sive policy with respect to the
building and maintenance of a
navy of a strength adequate to
the needs of the United States as
a great world power. As a means
to that end he continually strove
to bring the navy into closer con-
tact with the people.
Sanchas said that the more
people of the United States know
about their "first line of defease"
Its traditions and paramount pur-
poses. the more likely will It be
maintained in a condition to meet
any national emergency.
“On this special day it is sin-
cerely hoped that the American
people will take full advantage of
the opportunity afforded througn
the radio and press to become
better acquainted with the navy"
he said.
