Seeking a fabled tunnel under
the ancient mission of San Diego
de Alcala, E. P. Lyle III, San
Diego, Cal., newspaper man, was
struck by a falling tile and
hurled into-the pitch-black well
beneath the adobe mission house.
Dazed and bleeding, he managed
to climb to a point •from which
his companions could rescue
him, and thus cheated the death
which legend said would cer-
tainly befall the too inquisitive
adventurer.
Lyle and his fellow explorers
had descended a considerable
distance into the crumbling, 200-
year-old well when they stopped
on a small ledge to rest. Play-
ing his flashlight about the inky
interior, he saw what he thought
was the entrance to a tunnel.
Apparently the tunnel opened
into the well just above the level
of the water at the bottom of the
shaft. Getting into that tunnel
without falling into the water
would be a difficult and danger-
ous feat, Lyle knew, but he de-
cided to try it, anyway.
Then he saw a rickety, wooden
ladder, resting on the bottom of
the well and extending several
feet above the water line. Lyle
decided to take his chances on
the ladder holding his weight.
Leaving his companions on the
ledge, he gingerly began the pre-
carious descent. He had almost

The amendment to the standards
for oats, effective July 1, 1937, will es-
tablish the word “Thin” in lieu of the
word “Cereal" as the name for the
precent special grade for Cereal Oats.
No change has been made, however,
in the requirements for this grade nor
in the methods for its application.
Three amendments to the barley
standards, effective July 1,, 1937, will
provide: (1) A uniform, national
method for the determination of bar-
ley dockage in lieu of the separate
methods now prevailing for Eastern
barley and Western barley which in-
cludes the determination of coarse
dockage by means of a stalper riddle
sieve, (2) a new definition for "dam-
