Against Raymondville
Aggregation
(Special to The Herald)
MISSION. Feb. 28—Baseball fans
will see the Mission 30-30 Rifles
1935 Valley champions. In action
for the first time this season Sun-
day. March 8. when Raymondville’s
recently organized club comes here
for a prectlce game according to
Ernesto Contreras team business
manager.
The Raymondville tilt will iy>
the first of a series of practice
Tames the Rifles will play on the
local diamond before the opening
of their regular schedule the last
of March. Resides the Raymondville
game practice sessions have been
scheduled with teams from Fort
Ringgold at Rio Grande Citv. Sulli-
van City and Fort Brown of Browns-
ville. Contreras said.
Present plans are to open the sea-
son’s regular schedule which is the
most ambitious ever attempted by
the club. Sunday March 22. Al-
though the opposing team for that
date has not been definitely con-
tracted. it will be either the House
of David club from Beloit. Wiscon-
sin. or the Mexico Citv Aztecas. who
will start their tour of the United
States on or about that date.
Other teams that are being con-
tacted for early season games on the
Legion Field diamond here are the
Austin Black Senators. Benavides
Braves. Taft Tiger-. Kennedy White
Sox and th» Nu-Iev club of Austin.
Burs Invited
The Pittsburgh Pirates who will
begin spring training in San An-
tonio this coming month have been
invited to play here but present
indications. Manager Contreras said
are that the major league stars will
refuse because of the insufficient
guarantee he is able to offer. An-
other invitation however will be
extended them soon and every ef
fort will be made to meet the guar-1
antee they want.
Spring training for the Rifles
which started this week got away to
a slow start as the regulars and
rookies took things easy in order to
loosen up muscles that had been in-
active since last season. Fielding
practice and turns at bat consti-
tuted the major part of their after-
noon’s workouts.
Regulars reporting for practice
this first week were Leo Najo right-
fielder; O. Sanchez catcher; Pepe
Barrera second baseman; Ernesto!
Contreras shortstop; Ernesto Flores
left field and George Strohmeyer. j
pitcher. Ben Jackson of McAllen and
Tipo Contreras utility outfielder last
season are expected to report Mon-
day.
The most promising of the half-
dozen rookies trying for regular
berths are Add Webster former
Cedar Falls. Iowa first baseman and
G. Ramirez a youngster who has
grown up with the Rifles.

SARASOTA Fla. Feb. 28 <JF>—
This spot may well be called the
winter baseball capital of the world i
....More ball players hole In here
i for the cold months than in sm-
other city in the country....Quite
a few have bought homes and be-
come free holders with voting and
fishing privileges.
A great many others show up
around Dec. 1 “for a couple of
weeks of golf.” but seldom pull up
stakes until time to head for the
training camp—In one respect.
Sarasota's atmosphere is like the
six-day bike race—It gets you.... j
There you drop in for an hour but
stay all night—Here you come
for two weeks and stay all winter.

ALEX MORRISON says:
K. D. Henshel of Long Island
writes: “I see by the papers that
your brother Fred has been doing
well in tournaments on the Pacific
coast I would like to know if he
uses your system?”
The answer is part of the time.
In view of his performances this
may seem facetious.
During the recent Santa Cata-
lina island open he led the field
the first day with a record 60. His
next round was 69. His third and
fourth rounds were 68 and 65.
In 1929 he made what was re-
ported as a record score—136 for
86 holes over the difficult Hill-
crest course at Los Angeles to
win the qualifying round for the
national P. G. A. event.
In 1932 he outplayed Gene
Sarazen and Olin Dutra in the
finals to win the 315000 Agua
Caliente open. He has won any
number of sectional champion-
ships. In three national opens he
has tuned in record rounds.
But his main idea seems to be
the making of better 18 and 36-
hole scores than anyone else in
the game. In this he has been
most successful. However my
notion of success at the game cov-
ers both consistency and bril-
liance.

On Main Event* At
Matamoros
The largest gathering of fight fan?
the Valley has witnessed in many
years will be on hand at the Mata-
moros bullring Sunday afternoon
when holders of three Mexican titles
will display their wares against
worthy challengers.
The fame of Rodolfo "Baby" Casa-
nova. Mexican featherweight and
lightweight champion who meets
Ventura Arana In Matamoros Sun-
day. i* known wherever there are
boxing fans. If he keeps to the
straight and narrow for the next few
years Casanova la almost certain to
win the world’s bantamweight
championship competent boxing
critics assert. He already has de-
feated both Freddie Miller the NB.’*
feather title holder and ’’Baby’’
Arizmendi. feather champion recog-
nized by the New York Boxing com-1
mission.
The only suspicion directed at
Casanova has been the question of
whether he “could take It** He an-
swered this suspicion completely
New Years day by taking Miller’s
Sunday punches and then coming
back to hammer the NBA champion
from pillar to past to gain the de-
cision by a mile-wide margin.
The spectacular rbe of Casano-. i
from an ice-cream peddler in the!
Lagunilla Market at Mexico City to
a world-wide attraction in the feath-
er and lightweight divisions has fired
'he imagination of Americans and
Mexicans alike. Casanova is a
hnrum-sc3rum little fellow who has
a great personality. He is the idol
of the Mexican fans and he is by
long odds the best fighter operating
in Mexico today.
Ventura Arana who meets Casa-
nova over the 10 round route Sun-
day is a well known battler He is a
crowd pleaser who piles in from the
opening bell. Arana who has fought
\s much in the States as he nas in
Mexico should be abl* to give Casa-
nova a whale of a battle. This game
^crapner holds a decision over lew
Massey ranking American scrapper
according to the record books.
The second ten-rounder on the
nrogram will pit Ricardo Manzanillo.
Mexican flyweight champion against
"Traca Traca” Hernandez a young-
ster who has had a scnsationlly
quick ri'e to prominence in the
Arena Naeional under the guidance
of Jimmie Fit ten sage American
promoter of Mexico City.
Manzanillo is a veteran and is wise
in the ways of the ring. When he
opens up. he is one of the best crowd
pleasers in the Southern Republic
When the going gets tough he is a
counter-puncher and he will likely
use this style ot fighting against
Hernandez. This youngster stands an
excellent chance of beating the
champion in the Mitamoros bout.
The card will get under way in
the new bullring at 4 p. m. Sunday.
Reservations can be obtained at the
Valentin Department Store here. I.
Gallardo who holds the Matamoros
bullring concession is putting on
the bouts with the backing of Enri-
