Sports Review
By DELL HEINRICHS
Football season has almost come
and gone, It just seems that yes-
terday the season began. The con-
ference races are beginning' to
show the probable winners.
In the Pioneer Conference race
San Angelo is a heavy favorite to
cop the crown. Tarleton will be
second in the race if they beat
Arlington.
In the Southwest Conference race
TCU is beginning- to look like the
team that will represent the con-
ference in the Cotton Bowl. The
Froggies' only loss is to the Texas
Agg'ies who are not eligible to
play in the bowl game. The Long-
horns of Texas are still in the race
and may come to the top. They
have finally found a balanced Win-
ning' attack.
Big Red
In the Big Seven race it,is Okla-
homa all the way (as usual). The
Sooners have won 26 straight
games and there is no one on their
regular season schedule that can
defeat them. They are second in
the nation behind Maryland.
Maryland is first in the nation,
and will win the Atlantic Coast
Conference without a close game.
Their big' showdown will be with
Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl.
That will be one of the best games
of the year, and should rank along
.wit, hthe Maryland-UCLA game.
Another of the top games of
the season should be between Mich-
igan and UCLA in the Rose Bowl.
Michigan is third in the nation,
and currently leading the Big Ten
Conference. They only have to play
one more tough team and that is
Ohio State. Of course, they are all
rough in the Big Ten. Illinois up-
set Michigan 25-6 Saturday.
Rose Bowl
In the Pacific Coast Conference
It is UCLA all the way. The only
team that is really dangerous t>
theni is Washington. They should
Hot have much trouble with Wash-
ington, and then they meet USC
'who is ineligible for the Rose Bowl.
It should be UCLA undefeated in
conference play.
In the Southeastern Conference
it is Georgia Tech, Auburn; and
Mississippi State in a deadlock.
One of these teams will probably
face TCU in the Cotton Bowl. The
■winner of the conference will prob-
ably meet West Virginia in the
Sugar Bowl. Navy could squeeze
in some place.
In the Border Conference Texas
Tech should squeeze in, but they
are having their most terrible sea-
son that they have had in several
seasons. It looks as if their recruit-
ing system has not paid ofl" as well
as Bear Bryant's.
Boivl Games
The bowl games show great
promise this year. In the Rose
Bowl it will probably be Michigan
and UCLA. They are both single-
wing teams so there should be a
battle of bruising' power.
The mystery and trickery of the
split-T will be in the Orang'e Bowl,
where Maryland and Oklahoma
tangle up. They have been the best
split-T teams in the country over
the past nine years. I lotjk for
Oklahoma to beat' Maryland by a
score of 7-0, 14-7, or 21-14. It will
be one of the three scores.
In the Cotton Bowl there will
probably be two teams that run
the T formation. The Southwest
Conference representative will be
TCU or Texas; and both run the
T. Their opponent will probably be
Auburn or Georgia Tech, and both
of them run the T,

Tarleton State lost all hopes of
winning the Pioneer Conference
Championship Saturday when they
were defeated 7-0 by San. Angelo
College. San Angelo is virtually a
cinch for the crown since they only
need to defeat Schreiner Institute
for the championship.
Tarleton lost the t°ss and San
Angelo chose to receive. Jim Rob-
erts, TSC tackle, kicked a bounc-
ing kick with the wind at his back.
Clyde McLean took the bull on the
five-yard-iine and returned it to
the 23-yard-line,
On the third play of the game
San Angelo fumbled and Gene
Baker recovered for the Plows.
Jerry Flemmons skirted end for
a' first on the 28-yard-line. On a
fourth-down pass try by Flem-
mons, Charlie Davis intercepted for
SAC. Davis returned the pass to
the 34-yard-line.
7-0, San Angelo
It. was from the .34-yard-line
that San Angelo started their
drive for a touchdown. Without a
single pass Charlie Martin guided
the Rains GG-yards for the TD. It
was McLean's hard running that
ate up most of the yardage, his
longest gainer , being 23 yards. It
was McLean who dived three yards
for the TD. As he hit in the end
zone, he twisted a bad knee and
he was through for the day. Mc-
Lean only flayed G minutes of the
first quarter and gained G4 yards.
Tommy McAdams booted the ex-
tra point and that proved td> be
the nicU'g'in of victory.
Charlie Martin kicked-off to
Bobby Jones, TSC back, on the
20-yard-line and Jones returned it
to the 25-yard-line. The Plows
failed to gain and' Flemmons
punted to Ley Allen Jones on the
45-yard-line in SAC's end of the
field. As Jones caught the ball,
Larry Hill, TSC end, hit him hard
and then recovered the fumble.
This brilliant play put fire into
the Plows, and they began their
drive for a TD.
7-(i, San Angelo
Tarleton fullback Theon Thet-
ford rambled from the 38 down to
the 24-yard line. Gary Berry drove ;
hard to the 18-yard-line. On a I
fourth-down attempt Flemmons
hit Hill with a quickie pass on the
■10 for a first down just as the;
fast quarter ended. On fourth-down
Flemmons flipped a floating pass
into the arms of Sherrod Dunn, ill
the end zone for the Tarleton TD„
The extra point attempt by Bobby
Jones was blocked by the hard-
charging San Angelo line.
Jones sent a high kick-off down
to the 20-yard-line, and- Walter
Kidd ran it back to the 32-yard-
line; but a clipping penalty placed
the ball on the 17-yard-line. On,
third down Fred Arnold took ■
pitchout, ran to the right, and then.-
quick-kicked. The ball traveled 83r"
yards and bailey crossed the Tar^-!-
leton goal-line by a yard.
After an exchange of puntji,
Don Casselberry intercepted It
SAC pass on the 40 in the Earn,?
end of the field. Plow full-bifc lc!
.David Greer rambled to the Rams'
nine-yard-line before they were
able to down bin'. The Plows were
unable to move the ball, and Bobby
