The TV markets that NT will be playing in will also boost the
football team's visibility. For example, playing the University of
' California at Santa Barbara and the University of California at
Irvine will give NT exposure in the huge Los Angeles TV market.
Finally, NT now has the opportunity to be an all-I-A university:
All of the other varsity sports are already I-A.
Like it or not, a high-profile athletic department makes for a
high-profile university. NT is the fourth-largest university in
Texas, but it is not well-known outside of the state. Getting the
football team on televisions around the country would be an
extremely effective way to promote the university and increase
enrollment.

Defining obscenity is a subjective matter, opinions on the topic
are often varied. The law states that obscenity should be defined
by community standards. But where does the law prohibiting
obscenity cross the line that protects freedom of speech?

Whether one believes that football merits the kind of money and drinking cof-

Going West
Move will create new identity
Well, they've done it. The athletic department should be con-
gratulated; it has achieved its goal to move the football team up
to Division I-A.
At the homecoming game Saturday, NT achieved the atten-
dance goal of 68,000 for the season, and the football team has now
met all the requirements to move up from Division I-AA to I-A.
The weekend's success was topped off with NT's acceptance of
the invitation to join the Big West Conference. OK, congratulate
the athletic department twice. Being a part of a conference will be
essential to NT's I-A effort to stay in the division once it gets there.
Playing in the Big West will benefit NT in several ways. To
begin with, NT will receive a good deal of money to play the
schools in the Big West Conference. Teams generally receive at
least $100,000 per game in I-A. In the Southland Conference, the
teams are not generally paid — instead, they operate under a
trade-off agreement where they switch off home games.
