Improvements sought for regional law enforcement
Governor approves grants

AUST1N--Governor Dolph
Briscoe announced Oct. 23 his
approval of eight grants, totaling
$618,4,77 Tor improvements in
law enfoicement and criminal
instice in the area seived by the
Noith Central Texas Council of
Governments
The laigest giant, of $432,848
to Dallas County is for
continuation of the specialised
crime division of the Dallas
County District Attorney's Office.
The division screens, investigates
and prosecutes cases of
commercial traud, consumer
fraud and other types of
organised crime
A second grant of $55,5 J1 also
awarded to Dallas County will
continue an
e ducat lon-rehabilita turn pi ogram
in the county jail.
Through cooperation with El
Centro College, approximately 35
college level courses will be
offered to inmates and jail
employees During previous
funding year, 340 inmates earned
college credit through the project.
Another grant to Dallas
County provides $38,790 to
continue Rotary Town House, an
eight-bed halfway house for boys
needing additional residential care
after release from Dallas County
Boys Home,
Rotary Club volunteers
sponsor individual boys, giving
them counseling, recieation, and
tutoring help as needed. During a
boy's slay at Rotary Town House,
his parents may participate m
individual and group counseling to
pre pate tor the boy's return
home.
A $36,720 giant to the City of
Richardson is for purchase of
technical equipment for the city
police department. In#luded in
the purchase will he a
closed-curcuit television, system
for the jail/booking area, a records
reporting system, a multichannel
tape logging system, and crime
scene search equipment.
A grant of $19,000 for Starr
County will provide for
employment and operation
expenses of an assistant district
attorney for the 229th District
Attorney's Office. Reduction of
prosecutoi caseload and reduction
of average time between arrest
and trial are goals for the project.
Another grant, of SI6,180 to
Johnson County is for
establishment of a records and
identification system and crime
scene unit 111 Johnson County
Military science is planning
field training exercise Friday

The military science
department is planning a field
tiaining exercise (FTX) for
Nov '14-15 on the University
Farm^usl noith of town.
The FTX will begin about
3 p.m. on Friday and last until
noon Saturday.
The rangers, commanded by
Cdt. Cpt. Gary R. Wallace will be
airlifted to the farm by two liuey
UH-1H helicopters from Ft. Sill,
Oklahoma.
The rangers will move from the
landing /.one to another location
on the faint tor specialized classes
related to tactical operations.

Annual deadline
is extended
The deadline for pictures to be
made tor the 1975-76 Grassburr
has been extended to Nov 15.
Pictures may be made at
Miller's studio dining regular
business hours on Monday
through Saturday.

for having annual pictuies made.
