MEET YOUR
Presidential
Ray Browning
: "The senate is a powerful
organization and can get a lot
done through cooperation with
^the administration and the outside
■ community," Student Body
Presidential candidate Ray
, Browning said in an interview last
week. Browning feels that not
enough people on campus know
• the student senators or how to get
things passed through the senate.
"Groups push things through
the senate" right now, Browning
indicated. When asked whether
these were specific University
groups, he indicated
otherwise-and said most things in
the senate were pushed through
by a clique.
The 22-year-old senior from
Tuscola said he was not going to
base his presidential campaign on
any specific issues, but, rather,
with the general attitude of
students on campus. He said that
he doesn't feel much! can be
accomplished by talking about
specific issues. When asked how
lie would then run his presidency.
Browning indicated that he would
act as an agent to try to get
, people talking about what they're
interested in-both senators and
the student body at large.,
Browning hopes that more
people will feel freer to qff'er ideas
to senators and attend m'eptings of
the senate, "(f more people could
offer ideas things could work
better," lie stated. He indicated
that a lot of people don't know
how to get things accomplished
through the senate, and. that he
cbuld make the machinery work
more efficiently.
Browning wants to key his
campaign on generhl ,student
attitudes and on making the
senate function more effeciently
and represent more students than
it does now. He especially
encourages students to make their
views know through their
departmental senator. ■
Browning, who will graduate
this August, will be (a graduate
studeiit next fall. He lias attended
Tarleton for four years.. He is a
member of Alpha Chi, Alpha
Zeta, FFA and is in APO. He was
a dormitory counselor his
sophomore year, and a senator
during his junior year. He ran for
Student Body President last year.

Ernie Eckert •
Ernie Eckert, candidate for
student body president; is a junipr
Ag Ed major from Mason, Texas.
"I believe in the student and an
open Senate," Eckert said. "I
want the student to feel free to
come and talk to me so we, can
work with them and if any one
has any problem I tyapt'to hejp
them." j
"I will work with all types of
students on campus and ,1 try to -
get along with all types. I want to
be as fair to one person as I am to
the next."
Asked about the Senate now as
opposed to a Senate he wants to
create Eckert said, "Right now we
don't have enough student
involvement and interest. Make
them want to come to the
meetings by giving them
something to be interested in. It's
not that way now.
His specific issues are':
l.-to try, to get a student ■
(possibly - the president) from
Tarleton on the Texas A&M
student body executive board.
"The purpose for this is sq We can
get someone .on the- 'Board of
A&M more aware of the problems
and situations' here anil they can
possibly work with us and give us
their support we have: not been
getting but, deserve, from her.- I
think it is possible but I can't
promise that , we can get -one
person on the Executive Board;
We could possibly get more
financial support also by this."
2;-to buiid up recruiting. "I
believe, -that Tarleton recruiting
program has its good points but I
would like to see us spread out-
more places, high schools and'
larger and more regions of Texas. '
Without recruiting Tarleton will
never become a large University.
•We need the recruiting and we
need it to work for us f would
like to see more, students h.e'lp in
the recruiting activities because a
student can relate to another
student so much easier. They are
more influential, say than, a man to
a student."
On his qualifications, Eckert
said, "I have worked with the
Senate and student body since
I've been to-Tarleton and I think I
have the experience. I will
continue to work for the
students."
senator disagrees he or she is
entitled to defend his or her
views. In any case, aU students
should be heard."
The election of Student Body
President and Vice President will
be held April 20, and 21 in the
a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

Charley Foster
Charley Foster, a senior
marketing major from Abilene,
v,wants to be your President. When
ask his reason for running for
Student body president he stated
that "It is partly personal. I want
to leave something positive
behind. If I can give the student
senate priorities and effective
guidance, I'll be satisfied. I didn't
plan on it [running for President]
but I was challenged by it."
Foster considers his
qualifications as follows: 1. Being
a student. 2. One year's
experience as a senator. 3. Age
(26) and experience (in and out of
school for the past seven years).
Above all, Charlie feels that
interest is his major attribute. "I
would like to see Tarleton change
from a suitcase college to one
where a student feels like it's a
place to stay " When ask how he
proposed to achieve this Foster
stated that student involvement is
the key. "The senate can help by
encouraging more activities to be
scheduled on weekends. More
recruiting |eyon'd ,'Tarleton's
no"rmal recruiting boundaries
could help by enrolling more
stuc^nts from further distances
and more diverse Backgrounds.f
This would serve to make''
Tarleton more of a permanent:
community." , {
What lends .itself to the
ineffectiveness .of the student,
senate? Foster answered this
question by saying, "There is no
sense of priorities. The' current
executives and a lot of .the.
. senators can't tell. what's trivia
and what's hbt."" "The setting of
prioities starts with leadership,"
Foster stated, s> Judgement should,

Juan Hernandez
Juan Hernandez, 23, a junior
agricultural education major from
Ballinger has tossed his hat into
the political ring and is seeking
the office of Student Body
President.
In a recent interview, Juan
answered the following questions:
Q. Why are you running? A.
"My main reason for running is to
be able to serve the students and
help them any way I can."
'* Q . What are your
qualifications? A. "Presently, I am
holding the office of Student
Body Vice-President, and 1 know
how things work in the senate. I
was also Student Body President
at my high school."
Q. What is your platform? A.
"My belief is that if a promise is
made it should be carried out to
the best of one's ability. But I
don't like to make promises that I
can't keep. I would not only
disappoint the students but
myself as well. I just want to be
able to help the students in the
matters that concern them the
most,"
Q, What do you consider a
major problem here at Tarleton?
J A. "That thefe is not enough
student participation on campus;"
Q. How do you propose to

''Re?organizing and publicizing
the whole student senate. I will
-try not to let one club run the
, senate." •
Q, -What do you attribute to
the inefficeney of the student
Senate? A. "The way the senate is
organized. By letting one person
. taking credit, and'by letting one
person run the whole show." .
Q. How can it be solved? A. "If
elected, I will have more
cpmmunipa^io'ns • between the
, senators. y The senators will know
what will. be going on and be
