Honors
A member of the Tarleton Alumni
Association for many years, Tate
served on the Alumni Board of
Directors, and was a vice-chairman
for the 1985 Alumni Campaign for
Excellence endowment drive. In
1982 he was inducted into the
Tarleton Athletic Hall of Fame.
Willie and wife, Eve, have two
daughters and two grandchildren/
Dr. Johanson joined the faculty at
Tarleton State University in 1961
and has, served as Dean of the
School of Arts and Sciences since
1981. His dedication to teaching and
to the University was recognized in
1987 when he was named co-
recipient of the Pi Sigma Epsilon
"putstanding Teacher" award. Pi
Sigma Epsilon is a national, profes-
sional fraternity in sales, sales
management and marketing. The
Tarleton chapter selects an outstan-
ding faculty member each spring
based on student recommendations.

Raised in Cherokee, Texas, Dr.
Johanson holds a B.S. and M.A.
degree in biology and chemistry
from Southwest Texas State Univer-
sity. Taking a leave of absence, from
Tarleton to complete his graduate
studies, Dr. Johanson was award-
ed a Ph.D. in plant physiology and
biochemistry from Texas A&M
University in 1967,
'He'returned to Tarleton as an
Associate Professor of Biological
Sciences in 1967 and was promoted
to full professor in 1971. In 1973,
he was named chairman of the
department. During his eight years
as department chairman, Dr. Johan-
son was instrumental in the develop-
ment of Tarleton's Associate degree
in Nursing and the Bachelor in
Medical Technology programs.
A member of the Texas Academy
of Sciences for over 30 years, first
as a student then as a faculty
member, Dr. Johanson has served
on various committees, on the
Board of Directors and most recentr
ly as president of the T.A.S.
Active in a number of communi-
ty projects, Dr. Johanson is a past
president of the Stephenville
Chamber of Commerce and is a
longtime member of the Stephen-
ville Optimist Club where he has
served as District Lieutenant Gover-
nor. A devoted member of the
T.S.U. family, Dr. Johanson was a
chairman for the Tarleton Campaign
for Excellence endowment drive.
Currently he is on the Board of
Trustees for Harris Methodist
Hospital-Erath County.
His wife Marilyn is principal of
the Goldthwaite Elementary School.
Dr. Johanson is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Clyde Johanson of Cherokee. .
