The Department of Fine Arts and
Speech did their rendition of
Shakespere's classic Romeo and
Juliet Thursday, Friday and
Saturday.
•The set was beautiful, and the
costumes well made, but the actors
did not always appear prepared.
This is highly classic and one of
the most touching and beautiful of
Shakespeare's Works.
Romeo and Juliet is the tragic
story of two star-crossed lovers
whose families, the Capulets and the
Montagues, are at war with each
other.
Prince Escalus of Verona, has
decreed that the Montagues and
Capulets be banned from fighting in
the streets under penalty of death.
A disguised Romeo sneaks into a
Capulet masquerade ball, where he
and the lovely Juliet meet and fall
in love with each other.
The two have a secret marriage
performed by the Friar Laurance.
Hours later, Juliet's cousin Tybalt
tries to provoke Romeo into

fighting',- but RomeO's cousin Mer-
cutio fights in Romeo's place,
receiving a fatal blow from Tybalt.
An enraged Romeo, then kills
Tybalt, and the Prince decrees that
Romeo will die if seen again in
Verona.
Juliet's parents, unaware of her
marriage to Romeo, inform,her that
she is to be married to Coutity Paris.
Juliet runs to Friar Laurence, who
gives her, a potion to simulate death.
Juliet drinks the potion, falls into a
state resembling death, is decreed
dead, and placed into the family
tomb. Romeo, hearing of, her
"death," runs to the tomb,' where
he is confonted by a grieving Coun-
ty Paris* Romeo is forced to_ kill
Paris, and then drinks a vial of his
own poison arid dies. <
Juliet revives, finds the corpse of
her husband, and commits suicide
with Romeo's dagger, The truth is
then known by all, arid the Mon-
tagues and Capulets form a pact of
peace.
Two noteable performances are
those of Friar Laurance,-played by
Eric Cates, and Juliet's nurse,
played by pee Dee Hamilton. Cates
does an admirable job with his role,
incorporating a sense of buijior, and
making the Friar a believable,
humorous and lovable character.
Hamilton comes across well as
Juliet's nurse, showing an honest af-
fection for the young Juliet as as
almost surrogate mother, and a
quick wit in her dealings witfi.
Romeo's crass cousins.,
The performance was ' hafti'to
understand. The lines adapted by
Dr. Mingus, were supposed to have
been performed in j. lyrical,
melodious way, but were impossi-
ble to decipher due to the bulk of
the actors speaking with , hcjtvy
Texas accents. • .
The death scenes were long, arid
seemingly played out for humor.
This performance was the firs t of
the year and did not equal the ex-
cellence of last, year's
Shakespearean performance,. Tam-
ing of the Shrew, which was a
superior production.
