Tame East Central
in Season Opener
By Roderick Richardson

In a classic cliffhanger con-
frontation, the Tarleton State
Texans upset fourth rank
(Division I NAIA) East Central
Oklahoma in what many may
have thought would be an embar-
rassing defeat for them,
In the first 10 seconds of the
game the Texans had a run in with
dejavu from the game against
Mexico, In the first play after the
kickoff, Tarleton fumbles from
their own 26-yard line.
It didn't take long for East
Central to Capitalize on the mis-
take. An option play to Tiger run-
ning back Craig Jones placed East
Central on the scoreboard first.
The Tigers missed the extra point
to make the score 6-0.
Tarleton tried to retaliate in
their next possession. Starting
from their own 13-yard line,
Tarleton made a valiant effort to
score. Quarterback David Zunker
completed several short passes to
take the Texans to the Tigers eight
yard line. But alas, the East
Central defense denied them a
touchdown, and the Texans had to
settle for a field goal. Tarleton
was finally on the scoreboard trail-
ing 6-3.
In the closing minutes of the
first half, Tarleton's offense was
back on the gridiron. In their first
play of that possession, Zunker
launched a bomb to receiver Kevin
Benjamin for a 42-yard gain. That
brought them to the Tiger's 25-
yard line.
Despite their efforts for six
points, the Texans were denied
again. They settled for a tieing
field with 1:11 remaining in the
first quarter. The score was 6-6.
However, the first quarter
wasn't over. With under a minute
left, Tiger quarterback Richard
Peoples ran for 75-yards off an op-
tion play to put them back on top
13-6,

to add a variety of new recruiting
since the program is already
established. Hooten, being a re-
cent graduate of Tarleton, has
played pick up games with most
of the players on this year's team.
Hooten admits that in order for
the players to accept him as a
coach they have to respect him as
a player.
"There is a friendship between
the players and I. But they know
when it is time to hit the weight
room or practice it is strictly
business" Hooten said.
"The players have more respect
for a coach that has played in the
program because they know that
he has been through what they are
going through," Athletic Director
Lonn Reisman said.
"He is the type of guy that
would never do anything to embar-
rass this university," Reisman
added.
According to Reisman, Hooten
has proven himself to be very
trustworthy and a hard worker; he
will add a lot of energy to our
program.
Though East Central scored
so easily, Tarleton was still in the
game. Ten seconds into the sec-
ond quarter, Cory Bennett of East
Central fumbled the ball in an at-
tempt to return the punt.
After two plays, Running back
Lonzo Anderson powered his way
to the end zone. The Texans tied
the game again at 13-13.
Anderson's 3-yard run was
Tarleton's only touchdown.
Defensive end Opie Scott had a
fabulous game Saturday night.
Scott was responsible for 16 tack-
les, four of them for losses. Scott
also created a safety at the begin-
ning of the third quarter.
Other key defensive players
that night were linebacker Clint
Jentsch with 12 tackles and tackle
Alan Webb with eight.
At the start of the fourth quar-
ter, Tarleton was in the surprising
lead of 24-13, With 7:14 left on
the, clock, East Central ran an op-
tion play inside the 5-yard line.
The ball fumbled forward into the
end zone where they recovered it to
score, A two-point conversion
put East Central back in the game
24-21.
The climax of the game came
during the last seven minutes.
East Central recovered a fumble
right after their scoring drive.
With their lead in jeopardy, the
Texans started tighten up their de-
fense.,
In two plays, the Texan defense
came through with flying colors,
Jentsch recovered a fumble on
Tarleton's 26-yard line.
East Central had several
chances to steal the win from
TSU, but their efforts were done
all in vain. Tarleton held on to
win their opening game 24-21.
In his first official game as a
starting quarterback, Zunker threw
for 222-yards. Benjamin was the
top receiver that night as he pulled
down four receptions for 97-yards.
Anderson was the top rusher
for the Texans. He ran for a total
of 72-yards including a highlighted
31-yard run.
