“It’s the season of giving, and its what we should do
said Sloan who is a kindergarten teacher at E. C. Brice.
About bringing her children to volunteer, she said,
“I just want them to appreciate everything that they
have.”
Nelms: “They want them to understand what it’s
like to do some charity work.”
Sloan: “There’s not too many who pass by that don’t
put something in the bucket, even if it’s just coins. Ever
little bit helps.”
Nelms: “And I can tell you a little bit more about
the children - you can watch them coming across the
arking lot out there and they’ll start pulling on their
parent’s] coattails, wanting money...”
Sloan: “To put in the bucket. They like to do that.”
Nelms: “And the children like to ring that bell.”
In 2017, The Salvation Army raised more than $4
million, helped more than 23 million people across
America, served more than 52 million meals, and
assisted almost 10 million people with lodging assis-
tance.
“I just think it’s one of the best run charities,” said
Nelms, “where all the money that comes in, goes out
to help the local community.
Irene Hall was still ringing her Salvation Army
bell when I walked out of Walmart with my grocery
shopping. She was still talking to passerby’s, talking to
friends and neighbors, saying Thank you to everyone
who put a donation into the bucket.
“[Volunteering] gives you a good feeling, is all I can
tell you,” she said, still trying to stay out of the drizzle.
“You know that thing in the bible that says it’s better to
give than to receive? It’s the truth, all the way
