Congress has never passed a law
that couldn’t be repealed. If you don’t
like the fact that you can’t get a new
car, just remember that it’s your fault,
because the Congress you elected
wrote the law which has encouraged
GM to strike against labor and the
public.
STATE: The biggest story in Tex-
as is, strangely enough, something
which we’ve all taken for granted all
these years—the Democratic party.
The cards are being dealt now to de-
termine whether the Democratic party
will become the party of the people or
the party of the self-chosen few who
have run it in recent years.
The people rallied around in 1944
and got a half-way decision over the
few. They even drove some of the
few into forming a new party, which
they’ve now buried with appropriate
prayers and speeches. But now those
Regulars are easing back into the fold.
They are getting ready to run for of-
fice again on the Democratic ticket,
just as they have used the Democratic
party for years to run the state gov-,
ernment for the few and to fleece the
silent majority.
Under present state law, Adolf Hit-
ler could run for Governor on the
Democratic ticket, and the party ex-
ecutive committee wouldn’ thave the
right to rule that he isn’t a Democrat
on the primary ticket.
and therefore not entitled to a place
And that’s just one of the many
ways in which the Republicans and
Regulars have written our laws so
they could maintain their rule over
the majority. And when the majority
is hamstrung, there’s no democracy.

What Texas does about this is as
important to Texas as the decision on
atomic power is to the world and as
the GM strike is to the nation. The
next showdown on the issue in Texas
will be this week at the Young Demo-
crats’ Convention in Fort Worth. A
lot of aroused Young Democrats are
trying to restore that branch of the
party to the people. If they win, it’s
just a little step in the right direction.
If they lose, it makes it just that much
farther to go before we have democra-
cy in Texas. Next week, we’ll report
on the results of that convention.

There are three big news stories
of the day today. Let’s look at them
and see what we can do with them.
INTERNATIONAL: The only fact
which is important now international-
ly is atomic power. Congress has be-
fore it the May-Johnson Bill, which
would turn atomic research to an in-
dustry-military combination. Remem-
bering that fascism, as we know it, has
always developed when those two got
together, the May-Johnson Bill is the
biggest threat to peace and prosperity
right now. Industry wants to control
nuclear research because it does not
want it to be used in production, be-
cause that would outmode the present
methods of production. The military
would be happy to have the atom to
experiment with bigger and better
bombs, and nothing else, and to use
it as a threat against Russia. The
only sane solution is control by an
international civilian commission
which will experiment with the atom
for peaceful uses only, and forget
about military uses, and which will
make the results of that research
available to all.
The McMahon Committee is hearing
testimony daily which proves this.
Despite this, your Congressmen need
to be told again and again that the
May-Johnson Bill must be killed and
international controls set up for peace-
ful ends.

retary and Treasurer, 3910 Ave. P%.
G?M dealers are taking great de-
light in telling people who want new
cars that they can’t have them be-
cause the unions won’t let them have
cars. The facts are even simpler than
that. We can’t have new cars because
we, the taxpayers, are underwriting
the bill for G-M to go on strike against
both labor and the public. Under a
law passed in 1944, General Motors is
guaranteed its normal profits this
year and next, no matter whether they
produce cars or not. So when your
neighbor blames labor for the fact
that he has to keep driving that old
jalopy, remind him of that fact. And
also remind him that General Motors
has refused arbitration, mediation,
and even discussion, even when the
Federal Government offered to hold a
mediation meeting. And even more,
they have refused to provide cost fig-
ures on which the merits of the un-
ion’s claims could be studied. The big
fact in this biggest national story is
this: That more than $100,000,000 will
be taken out of the Federal Treasury
to pay the regular salaries of GM ex-
ecutives and the regular dividends of
GM stockholders. And it will be done
by authority iof the law which Con-
gress passed to “smooth the path of
reconversion.”
