several sacke of food wore stolen and 1
carried off in a wagon also. It was ,
evidently tho osmo thief or set of >
thieves that committed both robberles. ,
"Now, It seems to me that things
are getting in a pretty bad shape when
it gets to where thieves get so bold
that they use a wagon and eteal by the
wagon load from two different places
in the same neighborhood within a
week. Surely our officers could do ,
something to put a stop to thio if tkoy
tried. Part of our taxes goes to pay
offleers and in return we expect them
to protect us by using their utmost
efforts to apprehend the guilty parties
when a theft is committed.
“Now, I sm not a knocker. I think ।
we have a good bunch of sheriffs and
policemen. I think they are capable
men. The trouble is that they seem
to think these small matters are not ,
worth wasting their time on. But if
they don’t do something to stop the '
small thefts, the robbers will grow
bolder and be committing larger
burglaries. My mother ie a widow and
depends upon her little store for the
greater part of her living, and she can
not afford to lose $75 worth of goods
and have nothing done toward appro- ,
handing the thieves. And as there have
been several other burglaries in thia
elty recently, and not a one of the
thieves haa been caught, I think It is
time our officers were waking up and
doing something. Yours truly.

“If it’s true it's good campaign
dope—that's all I’ve got to say about
it," said Chief of Police Laughlin last
night when confronted with the state-
meat of Lee Cox, who tells about the
robbery of his mother’s stors and an
alleged epidemic of robbers, although
hs names but one in addition to ths Cox
store.
The other one is the robbery of a
stable. Policeman Woody said last
night he traced the wagon tracks early
tho morning of tho robbery, to two
houses, searched the houses and found
no food and not even any horses.
The statement of Mr, Cox follows:
"Please glvs this artiele space in
your paper and I hope some one in au- j
thorlty, who is capable of doing so, 1
will answer it.
'Toors has been a great deal of
burglarising and thleving in Austin 1
lately. Several stores, offices and
residencens havs been broken Into and
robbed of money and merchandise,
within the last two weeks. Tho thieves
are evidently very bold as thsy used a
wagon to carry off their loot in some
places. Not a one of these thieves have
been caught. Our sheriffs and police
department evidently are not trying
very hard to locate the thieves. It
seems to me that if they took an In*
terest in those cases and went after
them diligently that they could run
them down. My mother’s store on East
First Street was entered some time
during the night of March 20. An iron
bar on a front window was sawed into
and a general assortment of groceries
and dry goods was taken, at least $60
or 17# worth.
“A wagon was used to haul them off. '
A deputy sheriff and a elty policeman
came down, asked us a few questions, I
took a list of the goods missing and
went back to town. It was evidently
put down on the police blotter as a
trivial matter for ths papers came out.

Isst night. A piece of bacon and
some ladies' hose were stolen. No clue
to who committed the robbery Is
known.’ This was just the words
used in the paper They made it ap-

Now, I can assure you It was not a
