traction and’is further evident that
the trades days will continue to place
Austin before its own people and the
people of the surrounding towns as the
logical place to buy, and will show
them that this city is n a position to
fulfill their needs and wnts as well
as any city in the state.
"The trades day plan is a fine thing
for the city," said E. J. Palm, man-
ager of the Stelfox Jewelry Company.
"It is typical of the spirit that is lead-
ing Austin today to becomo one of the
leading cities of Texas. It shows the
same class of spirit that built the new
hotel and that will build other great
enterprises equally as important in
my mind this sort of a progressive
move is the kind that Austin needs,
and if such plans as this continue to
be made and executed it will mean
that the Capital City will enter upon
an era that will make it one of the
foremost cities of the entire state."
. Henry Wukasch, owner of one of
Austin’s prominent general merchan-
dise stores, stated that during the two
days set aside as special trades days
last month when the businesses of the
city were so highly advertised, putting
its goods before the people of the city
and the surrounding country, people
living at a distance of fifty and sixty
miles from Austin visited his store.
He further stated that he believed
nothing could help the Austin mer-
chants more than a period of two or
three days each month set aside as
trades days during which time the
Merchants might put on a special class
of advertising in order to attract the
buyers of this territory to Austin. This
campaign, hea believes, will tend to
bring the people of the surrounding
country to adopt Austin as their trades
center.
"Theer is no logical reason for Aus-
>,
goods with equally as good quality and
as fair- prices ns these other places.
The time has come when this city is
on the verge of an unusually* long step
toward progress. It is no longer the
small town that asks its citizens to
buy at home simply because it is home.
If Austin can’t give the service offered
by other cities then it is willing to
see its people go away to supply their
needs, but this has long since passed
questioning. With all the business
houses of this city combined there is
nothing lacking that the customer
wants. Austin has the quantity, the
quality and the fair prices as well as
the courteous service as that shown
by other cities.”
’ Robert E. Warren, owner of the
Warren Department Store at 714 Con-
gress Avenue, believes that thre
should be some class of wholesome en-
tertainment offered by the city in con-
nection with the trades day. This is
the thing that draws the crowd, and
the crowd is what boosts the business
of the local merchants. During each of
the two trades days there should be an
unusual phase of amusement offered
by the city. It has been seen in Aus- '
tin as well as other towns that some
attraction given by the city, especially
on the streets, 'always brings the peo-
ple of the nearby towns and the sur-
rounding country here. People will
buy their goods once they are in the
city, and for this reason the merchants
should see that there is an attractive
entertainment given on each of the
trades days. This is the thing, he said,
that the people will enjoy and remem-
ber, and feel that they have something
special to come to town for.
The special musical programs given
at the various business houses over
the city every day this week in con-
nection with the national music week
is a good example of the entertainment
that should be given during each of
the trades days, according to the be-
lief of Mr. Warren. This’sort of en-
tertainment is the thing that draws the
crowd and makes them feel that they
have gained something by coming to
town, and that there is something to
be eh joyed besides what they pay for.
He would suggest that there be some
entertainment given by the Austin'
merchants during the trades days of
each month, and that it be advertised
in advance to the extent that every
person In the trades territory will
have a chance to hear of It in time to
attend.
Mr. Warren is the type of merchant
who believes in putting what he has to
sell before the public.
He is strongly in favor of devising
a means of getting the patronage of
the people in Austin’s trades territore
and believes that it can be done pro-
vided the merchants of the city back
the project in the right way.
