Today is supposed to be the shortest
day in the year.
According to the calendar the sun is
, later getting up, and goes down to rest
| earlier at this particular period of the
1 season. The general acceptance is that
g the longest day of the year is June 21,
I and the shortest this day in December,
I but in fact the variation between sun-
| rise and sunset during midwinter is so
I small that ft is hardly noticeable. Ac-
i cording to the best authorities, in the
I northern latitudes the day grows short-
k er by one minute until December 21,
k when it measures nine hours and four-
7 teen minutes. On December 22 it in-
( creases to fifteen minutes and on De-
ll cember 23 falls back to fourteen Inin-

i Sunday the number of prisoners in jail
(would be reduced to less than one-half.
I Out of the twelve two have been sen-
• tenced for murder, nine for burglary
and one for the theft of a cow. Both
of the prisoners convicted of murder
killed relatives, one a brother and the
other his father. The prisoner accused
of murdering his father is Eddie Hull,
aged 14 years. The tragedy occurred
last September at the Hall homestead,
several miles west of Austin, and the
defendant claimed that the shooting
was accidental, although when the case
went to trial the state offered some
very strong testimony and the jury re-
turned a verdict of guilty of man-
slaughter and assessed the boy’s pun-
ishment at two years’ confinement in
the reformatory. The youthful pris-
oner is very small for his age and only
weighs about 65 pounds. Ho shot his
father with a shotgun at the time his
father was attempting to whip him.
Rannel Bedford, a negro, is the other
prisoner who has a sentence for mur-

their home near Austin several months
