Sprays must be applied before

Best results are obtained if the
spraying is done three to five
days after the nuts are set, and
in any case should not be delayed
longer than 10 days afterward.

which expires June 30. It is the ■
law to keep living costs steady. ■
Congress now is engaged in de- ■

Without controls—when things i ■

“I even gained weight,” Lieu-
tenant Maness said.
An Albanian messenger put al-
lied authorities in toucn with the
nurses. Instructions were sent and
the Texas girl and her compan-
ions followed them to the letter,
setting out on foot for a desig-
nated point.
When they reached it they
looked for a man who would an-
swer their sign with the correct
counter-sign. They found him,
and in a matter of a few days
they were back in allied hands.
Then they were granted special
leaves.
Native of Honey Grove
Lieutenant Maness is a native
of Honey Grove, Fannin county,
Texas, and iater lived at Paris.
She is a graduate of Roxton, Tex-

She was formerly employed at
Northwestern hospital, Amarillo,
Texas, and received her army
training at Lubbock Army Air

She has a sister, Doris Maness,

called the "Little Stee" formula
because the WLB was dealing
with steelworkers’ demands at
the time—although the BLS in-
dex shows living costs now are
23 per cent higher than January,
1941.
Laugh at Price Index
Labor snickers at the index,
calls the WLB halter on wages
the "Big Steal” formula, and says
living costs are really 43*4 per
cent higher than January 1, 1941,
and that therefore wages should
go up that high.
The index is based on the
paces of selected commodities in
34 large cities. Labor said the
method of selection is wrong, that
the 34 cities don’t truly reflect
the general rise in prices.
Labor says this specifically:
The index fails to take into con-
sideration the increased cost to
workers of goods which have de-
; teriorated in quality and that
workers spend more when they
have to buy more expensive
, items because of the disappear-
• ance of cheaper lines.
। And labor adds this point: The
■ index is compiled now as it was
' before the war when compara-
tively few Americans had to pay
income taxes. Now most of them
pay. Therefore, labor says, taxes
should be considered in the in-
dex.
But along comes the National
Industrial Conference Board, an
independent New York research
agency supported by business
and labor, and says the BLS in-
dex is wrong because it is too
. aigh and that labor’s figure—a
: 23% per cent increase— is away
.00 high.
; The one trouble in searching
; or agreement among people who
i make up a living cost index is
.hat no two groups will arrive at
i .he same answers. They use dif-
i .erent methods, get different re-
i sults.
