Police Officers, and the manager of Wal-Mart stepped in to save
the day.
We went shopping at Wal-Mart and replaced the missing items
after midnight on Christmas Eve! The deputies and officers paid
for them, knowing we could not. The joy on the faces of our boys
a few hours later when they saw Santa’s offerings was all the more
special to us knowing that others in our community care just as
much for our kids as we do.
Even though we are not natives of Gilmer or even Upshur
County, this is our home. The wonderful people who helped save
and provide Christmas for our kids this year help us remember to
be proud of that fact. We sincerely believe that the best people in
the world live right here in our community. Thanks again to all the
Angels and Santas who together made our family’s Christmas very
merry indeed.

A wish for the new year
Let s keep community spirit alive
Today’s guest editorial arrived in the form of a leter expressing
heartfrit appreciation for acts of individual charity that helped
restore one Gilmer family’s faith in their fellow humans
The Howells give credit to specific people who gave them a
merry Christmas, but also express the Idea that “the best people in
the world live right here in our community.” It’s a sentiment that
this newspaper has expressed many times in the 80 years it has
operated under one family’s ownership. And we think it is a good
and fitting thought with which to begin a new year.
Pundits of all persuasions are taking the year’s end to point out
that this nation is sorely lacking in civic-mindedness as well as in
individual concern for one’s neighbors. Democracy itself is threat-
ened by this failing, they say.
Not to put too pridefill a cast on it, we make bold to point out
that construction is under way on a long-sought civic center, an
historic museum in Gilmer has been well launched, a locally-
funded literacy program is operating, among other manifestations
of ci vic-mindedness in our county.
May we continue to keep that spirit alive.

This is a letter of gratitude and praise for some speci al people in
our community. After several months of financial struggle, we
were wondering how to explain to our four boys that Santa was
having a rough time and wouldn't be able to bring much this year.
Much to our surprise, out-of-the-blue, a wonderful group of people
from a local church and the National Honor Society members at
the high school offered to help us. What had started as a very
depressing Christmas season for us appeared to be turning out just
fine through the grace of God and the kindness of strangers.
However, Saturday night when we went to a storage building to
pick up the few gifts we had scrimped and saved to provide
personally for our kids, the gifts were missing! Somehow, even
