• ness. But after only a short time
he was suddenly stricken with
terrible pain. The nearest doc-
tor was 100 miles away, in
Almagordo, where Mr. Cain was
told that he needed surgery.
“I just couldn't stand to think
about that, with a strange doc-
tor," he said. So he packed the
family up and came back to
Gilmer and his own doctor, the
late Dr. Hugh Ragland. “I didn't
have to have surgery either," he .
said.
In March, 1955 he went to
work for Lone Star Steel Com-
pany, where he was employed
until his retirement in August,
1986. He remembers those years
as “31 hard years."
In addition, until only recently
he grew a large vegetable gar-
den every year. He currently
serves as chief of the New Moun-
tain Volunteer Fire Department
“Barbara always wanted to
help with whatever we were do-
ing,” her father recalls.
And he proudly proclaims that
they “raised an only child with-
out her being spoiled.” He
stressed that he always taught
her to be respectful, and didn't
give her everything she wanted.
The family faced alotof sick-
ness through theyears, with Mr.
Cain facing surgery for appendi-
citis, ulcers, and gallstones, as
well as knee surgery and sur-
gery to remove a saliva gland.
In 1961 he suffered a heart
attack that kept him in bed for
five weeks. He has since suf-
fered two more heart attacks,
and underwent ingioplasty sur-
gery in 1989.
“Barbara's had to go through
a lot,” he said, “but through it all
she learned to cope."
“The Lord has really blessed
us—I was afraid I wouldn't live
to see Barbara grow up,” he
added.
Mr. Cain adds that he and his
wife have always been active in

What advice does Mr. Cain
offer to young fathers today?
“I’d tell any father, a man
and wife should stay together. If
their mother tells a child some-
thing, go along with what she
says so the child will respect you
both. Don’t contradict her au-
thority. And when you say some-
thing, be firm.
“But most important, be a liv-
ing example for your child.”
