award of $50.00 presented annually by Mrs. Eleanor Weinbaum to the
Lamar student writing the best original poem of twenty lines during the
school year. Winner of this award is selected yb the judges appointed by
the head of the English Department; the award is announced on Poetry
Day in Texas and is presented on Lamar Award Day.
The C. W. Bingman Special Recognition Award was established in
1957 by Mrs. C. W. Bingman in memory of her husband, a former presi-
dent of Lamar. This award consists of a printed plaque and $25 in
cash, and it is presented to a student in recognition of an outstanding
achievement.
The Delta Eta Chapter of the International Fraternity of Delta Sigma
Pi annually awards a gold key to the male graduate who earns the high-
est scholastic average in the School of Business Administration.
The Dr. Roy A. McKnight Memorial Award of $100.00 is given an-
nually to a junior or senior pre-dental student. It is provided through
a grant donated by friends of the late Dr. Roy A. McKnight.
The L. R. Pietzsch Memorial Engineering Award, established in 1954
by the Pietzsch family, is an annual cash award of $50.00. It is given
in memory of L. R. Pietzsch, the first president of Lamar. The recipient
is selected by the faculty of the School of Engineering on the basis of
scholarship and citizenship.
The E. C. Rechtin Award is provided by anonymous donors and has
a value of $250.00. Juniors and seniors are eligible. Interested students
may get details from the Assistant Dean of Men.
The Weed Award established by the Weed family has a cash value
of $50.00 which is divided into two awards of $15.00 each and two awards
of $10.00 each. This award is presented to the winners in a speech
contest and in an essay contest. The subjects of these contests must have
bearing on American Government and good citizenship.
The Nena Morris Memorial Awards, consisting of three prizes, $25.00,
$15.00, and $10.00, are given the three students ranking highest in an
oral and written Spanish examination held each spring by the Pan-
Amercian Round Table of Beaumont. The purpose of the contest, which
is open to any undergraduate student of Lamar whose preparatory college
work has been done in the United States, is to increase interest in read-
ing, writing, and speaking Spanish. A minimum of ten contestants is
required to assure a contest.
Loan Funds
The Lula M. Long Loan Fund is provided to assist students to con-
tinue their work at the college when, without financial assistance, they
would be compelled to withdraw. Any full-time student who has com-
pleted one semester of work with at least a "C" average is eligible to
apply for a loan. Applications should be made to the Office of the Dean
of Student Life.
The Lamar Emergency Loan Fund for Girls has been established by
the American Association of University Women, Beaumont Chapter. This
fund is designed to aid female students of Lamar Tech in the event ofGENERAL INFORMATION
