NEW YORK, Jan. 13 (UP)—The
U. S. Golf Association hauled off
today and in its most austere man-
ner criticized various sections of
the nation for slip-shod amateur-
ism, gambling and making the
game too easy.
How anybody can make golf easy
for a man with a hook, a slice or
short wood shots is hard to con-
ceive but the governing body of
amateur golf made it clear that
certain depredations must cease in
shall's plane. On the day before
the take-off Marshall learned that
Hopkins was touring the city buy-
ing gifts to present to friends in
London. Included among these
gifts, each wrapped in a separate
package, were Brussels sprouts -
the one vegetable which was plen-
tiful in ration-stricken England
"I thought it was a good joke,”
said Gen. Marshall, "until I found
out that Harry put My card in each
package.”
THEATRE NOTE The new Sec-
retary of State once was asked
“What was your most enjoyable
evening in the theatre?" He an-
swered: "The night in Uniontown,
Pa., when my family permitted me
to go with a friend of mine, whose
father was the local banker, to any
show we selected. We sat in the
first row, the two of us, next to the
big drum, and saw the play—'Mrs.
Murphy and Her Goats.’ It was the
most enjoyable, because it was
my first show.”
BUSINESS DEPT.: Louis Fisch-

Nothing was said about using
hard, comforting words after

area was frowned upon for using
a profitable little gimmick known
as the Calcutta pool.
