receives award
The United States Achieve-
ment Academy announced that
Cory Chapman from Harmony
High School has been named a
United States National Award
Winner in student council.
He is the son of Mike and
Jeanette Chapman of Harmony.
Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs.
Gary Chapman of Lockhart and
C.D. Holdaway of Geary, Okla.
Cory will appear in the United
States Achievement Academy
Official Yearbook, which is pub-
lished nationally.
The Academy selects USSA
winners upon the exclusive rec-
ommendation of teachers,
coaches, counselors, and other
qualified sponsors and upon the
standards of selection set forth
by the Academy.

Jack Bailey, 61, of Gilmer were
held at 11 a.m. Monday, May
12, at Gilmer Apostolic Church
with Bro. Eddie Jones offici-
ating. Burial was at Sunset
Memorial Park under the di-
rection of Grubbs-Loyd Fu-
neral Home..
Mr. Bailey died Saturday,
May 10, at Tyler.
He was born Oct. 6,1935 in
Duncan, Okla. and had been a
resident of Upshur County
since 1969. He was a member
of Gilmer Apostolic Church
and was self-employed with
Bailey and Sons Painting.
He is survived by his wife,
Mary Bailey of Gilmer; three
sons. Bob Watson and Billy
Bailey, of Gilmer and Gene
Watson of Philadelphia, Pa.;
two daughters, Pam Watson
of Gilmer and Cathy Hill of
Longview; five brothers, Ed-
ward Bailey of Bakersfield,
Calif., Johnny Bailey, Wayne
Bailey, Dub Bailey and Roy
Bailey, of Ontario, Calif.; two
sisters, Jessie Thornton of
Ontario, Calif, and Wanda
Smith of Gilmer; 17 grand-
children and seven great-
grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bob
Cochen, Kenny Dunn, Jessie
Dunn, Terry Lushner, Tony
Hayden and Danny Quillen.

Duke, 66, of Gilmer will be
held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May
17, at First Baptist Church
with Dr. David Jenkins offici-
ating. Burial will be at Little
Mound Cemetery under the
direction of Croley Funeral
Home.
Mr. Duke died Thursday,
May 15, in Gilmer.
A native and lifetime resi-
dent of Upshur County, he
was born Aug. 17,1930.
He was a retired employee
of the Texas Department of
Transportation, and was a
member of the Masonic Lodge
and Bethesda Lodge.
He married the former
Georgia Ann James on June
21,1953 at Little Mound Bap-
tist Church, and she survives.
Also surviving are a son
and daughter and law, Randy
and Brenda Duke of Gilmer,
three grandsons, Brandon
Duke, Britt Duke and Bryce
Duke of Gilmer; four broth-
ers, Lester Duke of Garland,
Kenneth Duke, Wendell Duke
and Larry Duke of Gilmer;
and three sisters, Jessie Wil-
son of Longview, Becky Jo
Laney of Gilmer and Dorothy
Warren of Winnsboro.
Named pallbearers were

Mathis on Jan. 22, 1927 in Big

Fla.; one daughter, Lula Ward
of Greenville; one sister, Jasya

Duffey, 77, of Gilmer were

was at Simpsonville Cem-
etery.
Mrs. Duffey died Sunday,
May 11, at her home.
She was born March 12,
1920in Wood County and had
been a resident of Upshur
County since 1936. She was a
member of Perryville Meth-
odist Church and was a home-
maker. . >
She married Guy W. Duffey
on Dec. 24, 1936 in Wood
County and is survived by
him.
She is also survived by two
daughters, Jane Faulkner of
Gilmer and Kay Horne of
Georgia; five grandchildren
and four great-grandchildren.
Named pallbearers were
Glen Home, Wesley Home,
Damon Horne, Wendell
Stegar, Bill Robinson and Don
McMullen.
