the cotton crop is breaking all records.
Announcement today by the census bu-
Oats hardened in value with other

a scattered character.
Weakness in the hog market pulled
down provisions. Most of the trade was
in January options.
Gossip that foreignerse were buyers,
both of cash wheat and future deliv-
eries. helped later to bring about an
additional upturn. The close wasstrong

HARDWAY & CATHEY
NEW ORLEANS, Oct. 2.—The cot-
ton market bulged 50 points on the
most active months around the open-
ing today on strenuous buying follow-
ing the second report of the season on
ginning from the census bureau. The
figures of 4,062.991 bales, while break-
ing all records, were far under the
highest private estimates, which
seeme dto be the reason for the buy-
ing.
Activity increased following the con-
dition report of 56 3 per cent of the
Naw British armored tractor charging a German trench.

NEW YORK, Oct. 2.—Developments
over the week-end, particularly the
publication of numerous additional
favorable railway statements of earn-
ings, infused strength to investment
issues’at today’s opening. Norfolk &
Western rose 2 points to the new rec-
ord of 137%. with a keen inquiry for
other coalers, notably Lehigh Valley,
Eries and Reading. Illinois Central
and Northern Pacific were the other
active and strong features of that
division. Industrials, including United
States Stel, American Can, Pressed
Steel Car and Colorado Fuel, were
higher by 1 to 2 joints, with concurrent
gains in leading equipments and met-
als.
The noteworthy feature of the in-
termediate session was its extreme
apathy, business.. being at the lowest
ebb of any , similar period for the past
month. Prices were dispose to sag
on moderate offerings,' rails yielding
with specialties.
Steel and some rails were at lowest
quotations in the final hour, but hard-
ened toward the end on another rise
in marines and equipments. ‘ Closed

CHICAGO, Oct. 2.—Increasing drouth
in Argentina gave a basis today for a !
fresh advance in wheat prices here. 1
Dispatches from Rosario, in the center
of the dry district, said the effects of |
the long continued lack of rain were
serious and that all crops were suf-
fering. Scantiness of receipts at the
domestic spring wheat terminals and
at Winnipeg tended also to handicap
the bulls. Opening quotations from
%c to %c higher, with December at !
31.54% to $154% and May at 81 54 I
to 31.54%, were followed by moderate
further gains.
Higher prices for corn resulted from
the bulge in wheat. Fine weather failed 1
to act as an offset. After opening <
%c off to a shade up, the market scored ■
advances all around. T
