I This story is not a question and
answer session into the lifestyle and
practices of the Bandidos, but rather
an interpretive view of my 16 hour
stay at the Club of Colors while they
were there,
Bandidos do not particularly
encourage the asking of questions As
Bandido National President Ronnie
“■Hodges summed it up quite frankly
with a grin. "you can t say we re all

What it was.
It's countdown time'" a voice

Beer, water and smokes. A place .
to sit down and a place to stretch, and
“where’s the phone’”
Despite the late hour and a long
day, activity is already in progress
The juke box is on, and the pool tables
are quickly put into operation. The
barmaids are working a rush such as
they haven’t often seen. In the next
one and one - half hour over 11,000 in
beer will be sold across the bar.
But amidst the joking and relax-
ing, a group is talking quietly and
firmly with the owner, and serious
looks are on their faces,
A number of members were
arrested after crossing the line into
Montgomery County. These members
are waiting for the arrival of the
National Presideht of their club, and
to call a bondsman and start the
arrangements to get their “brothers
out" of jail A process that will last
through Monday evening. Also some
of them have had their hikes confis-
cated They will not be able to
retrieve them for days.
Despite arrangements for this
gathering, members have just had it
made plain to them that they are not
wanted in Montgomery County. Not *
being wanted is a way of life for them,
according to club owner Bass. They
expect it.
They are a people who choose to
be different Among the Bandido
membership are men known to be
murders and thieves. There are also
college graduates, highly intellectual
people and skilled craftsmen. As a
whole they are viewed by the general
public as a bunch of no goods, but in
most cases’, the dislike aimed toward
At 2 a.m. the bar closes, and

beer drinking, there is little grumbl-
ing. Some laws can’t be gotten
around. Most of the group move
outside for the night, eventually to
sleep. Some will remain up until late
in the morning. a 7
On Sunday, I arrive back at tire
club around noon. Bikes and bikers
are scattered around the establish-
ment in groups, and despite the "
lounging atmosphere, there is still
unease. More members of the club
were arrested that morning at the ’76
truck stop where they went for break-
fast.
Throughout that afternoon I
greeted faces familiar from the past
year, and watched members meeting
and greeting with old friends.
An auction is again in progress
in back, and money is raised for the
brothers in prisons - the joint. Then
it’s time for a club business meeting.
An time for non - members to excuse
themselves elsewhere.
If there is any animosity direct-
ed at me this year because of my -
status as a reporter, I do not feel it.
But there is still a feeling of unrest in
the air concerning the flurry of police
activity and arrests.
As in last year’s visit, I ask few
questions, relying mostly on impres-
sions. Shortly after 3 p.m , after a
brief conference with the National
President, I am again given permis-
sion to take pictures and am accom-
panied by my former Bandido guide,
Spurs.
Later in the evening, a band sets
up inside The music is good, mostly

country with rocK mixed in now and
then. The crowd voices it* approval
and sends in requests for different
songs it wants to near.
“Hey, we’re a Texas tradition,
too,” announces the lead singer after
performing a tribute to Tex Williams.
The opinion was endorsed by the
crowd, and set me to pondering.
A Texas tradition? A lot of things
qualify as a Texas tradition, but who
would have ever thought of the
Bandidos as one?
The Bandidos do. And they are
probably one tradition, the State of
Texas would just as soon trade in for
more armadillos.
But the Bandidos are, for what-
ever each individual’s reason is, what
they are. To an outsider, what they
are is not always clear. While they are
perfectly capable of living up to the
bad reputation accredited to them,
they have also demonstrated for the
second time now, in Montgomery
County at least, that they can live up
to their motto, “live and let live”.
My visit with the Bandidos ended
at 8 p.m. Sunday. Whether they will
return to the Club of Colors in
Montgomery County again next year
is not yet known. It is a question many
people are asking though.
I still think that the many
questions the general public has
about the Bandidos is adequately, if
' not briefly, expressed in their mottos
and slogans.
As for next year, I left the club
thinking of the one that says,
“Our colors don’t run.”

One year ago a Cleveland Advo-
cate reporter was invited to attend a
gathering of the Badidos at the Club of
Colors in New Caney. That invitation
was accepted. The gathering of ap
proximately 300 members of the Ban-
didos Motorcycle Club was conducted
peacefully, without incident.
There were not fights, neither
during my nine hour stay there, nor
during the times I was not present. No
hordes of bikers swarmed through the
countryside harrassing locals or de-
stroying property in the manner
depicted by the many motorcycle
movies made in the ‘60’$.
This year an invitation to attend
the Bandidos' gathering was again
issued to this reporter and accepted
