An oversight and/or a simple mistake in measuring has cost Cleveland
Independent School District taxpayers nearly $5,000 additional money in
unanticipated costs for the junior high school roof job
Just who is at fault has not been determined yet by the administration
or the board, a
But the board, faced with a change order request so that construction
could continue at last week's meeting, did approve an additional $4,828 ex
penditure for firewalls and extension of the canopy roof now under construe
tion >
City inspection discovered that firewalls were not included in the plans
prepared by Cleveland Engineering
The fact that six firewalls were not in the plans and that the canopy
was not big enough to cover all the classrooms, was also missed by District
Director of Auxiliary Services Frank Devereaux, who was acting as liasson
between the administration office of Supt Bobby Wood and the engineering
firm
Neither has it been explained why the plans on a school building had not
been checked out for safety items, such as firewalls even before bids had
been asked
The contractor reported the need for the change order when the city in
spection revealed the deficiencies.
Four firewalls for the first wing added $2,395 to the cost, and two
firewalls in the second wing cost $1,183 more To extend the roof over the rest
of a classroom carried an additional tab of $1,250
Contract for the roof job went to a Splendora firm for $92,000 Construe
tion on the project is well along this week
