mon" who deserved probation and
need* mental treatment, jurors
agreed after two and one-half
hours of deliberation that he
should serve one of the longer
prison sentences ordered by a
local jury in recent years.
The six women and six men on
the jury was urged by several of
Vandefifer’s friends and relatives
to grant him probation as they told
of many good things he has done in
his life.
Several pointedly told the jury
they believed it had mode a
mistake in convicting Vandefifer of
the charge on the initial phase of
the trial on Tuesday.
One woman who urged the jury
to grant him probation also
testified that she would not
hesitate to employ Vandefifer for a
home health care service because
she simply did not believe he was
guilty of the allegation despite the
jury s conviction of him.
In answer to prosecutor Mike
Parker s question, however she
conceded that if she felt he really
were guilty she would not con-
sider employing him

Vandefifer had countered
however that the allegations were
merely the result of a plot by his
ex-wife to prevent him from taking
their son following their divorce
Only after Vandefifer had been
convicted on Tuesday was it in-
dicated that a psychologist who
examined Vandefifer prior to the
trial felt that he has a sexual
deviation which favors children.
And in testifying as a defense
witness in the phase of the trial in
which punishment is decided
Frederick Gary Mears Ph D of
Tyler said that it often is difficult
to "cure the deviation called
pedophilia ' which he described
as a desire for an adult to have
sexual relation* with children of
either sex
He said successful treatment
usually requires a "rigid Struc-
tured environmenf" such as a men
tot hospital but that he left prison
would only make the problem war
so when a man with the deviation
